Alize's seizures have always been fairly basic tonic-clonic (sorry I'm not good with the names). Since they were infrequent although very long (up to 45min) I was coping more with some of his other problems. His normal seizure would start with twitching upper L lip, then R eye, then face, then total body. Yesterday he was irritable and slept more than usual. No temperature.
Now today he has had several episodes where he starts with the twitchy lip and sometimes eye and it stops. These episodes only last a few seconds (no more than 10). Any idea what is happening? Karen

have you done any med changes lately? maybe the seizures are stopping before they progress to a full blown tc. hoping he's doing well today.

It sounds like Alize typically has a partial seizure (part of the brain, just the facial twitches) that generalizes (spreads) to the rest of the body into a full-blown tonic-clonic. From your description, it sounds like he is now having just the initial partial seizure and it is NOT generalizing (yay!). So... if the seizure med is new, this sounds like it's working (seizure is not generalizing). If the med is old, maybe it needs to be increased slightly to stop the partial completely? Liz has a good point on the weather changes and hydro situation (not my expertise at all).

Didn't he just dump the Pheno? (Hope I'm right on that one!) If so, he might need a little Keppra boost.

I agree with Kathy - sounds like his partial seizures are remaining partial instead of generalizing.

His new seizure sounds a LOT like my son's SP/CPs - very short, involving mostly the face (lips, eyes), and clustering.

Last drop of the pheno was early Oct. It is now at 24mg. I'm waiting for the neurologist to call back. It takes her a few days which is okay if nothing else changes. I'm betting on a keppra increase. Karen

Now he's having fine muscle tremor episodes, it's almost like the chilling you see before a fever but no fever. This morning he would tremor, stop, tremor, stop. After 4-5 minutes, I decided to treat it as a seizure and gave diastat. It stopped. His heart rate for the next hour was 140s to 160s. The diastat did not put him to sleep. Go figure. The neurologist's nurse called me at 4p yesterday and was going to speak to the doctor and get back with me today. Do you think the tremors are seizures? Karen:confused:

I probably would have given him Diastat, too. Yeah, I think the tremors sound seizury. Although, I was trying to find info on Keppra, and tremors are listed as a side effect (see page 16... actually the document itself says it is on the bottom of page 19 and top of page 20 http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/1999/21035lbl.pdf). However, since you were seeing the start of his typical seizure earlier, I would tend to think the tremors are also seizure related. It sounds like Keppra is holding the seizure back, but it's not quite enough. (((Hugs))) I hope your neuro gets back to you quickly.

Hi,
What you are describing sounds a lot like a partial sz. possibly complex partial sz. I've had them for over 30 yrs. and I will get muscle spasms around my mouth that I'm not able to control. Take note and ask your son if he sees colors in his eyes or hears any words repeated over and over again that sounds like an echo. If he does tell him the moment that he has any of these signs to tighten up the muscles in his body and make his hands into tight fists this will help stop the sz. It's worked great for me since the 1970's.
Also take note to see if he's smacking his lips, pulling at his clothes, or wandering around the room these are all signs of a complex partial sz. Here's wishing you and your family the best and May God Bless All of You!
