I am hoping you can answer my question.....I am taking "Medical Law & Ethics" and I need to know the answer to the following:

If a physician resides in one state, and is licensed by that particular state, and his practice is in another state, does the physician have to have multiple licenses, since he lives in one, and works in another?

Say he lived in southern Ohio, but, works right across the border in Kentucky?

I would appreciate your help with this one.........

My guess would be yes, just like lawyers must....

Look online at the state medical boards for each of those states, and see what they say you must do to practice in that state.

I am surprised that such an answer is not pointed to in your course background materials (foot/end notes, appendices, etc.) You would do well to do your own searching, rather than rely on the guesses of non-medical lay people.

No. A physician need not lives in the state that he or she is practicing in. In fact, many physicians are licensed in multiple states. In your example, in order to practice in Kentucky, he would need only a KY license and not an OH license.

Thanks for reporting back on this....it is a good thing to know.

My guess was based on something I noticed about one of my docs. She was licensed at one time in Rhode Island, and now is only registered in Massachusetts. She works in MA but still lives in RI.

Maybe her employer wanted the MA registration....and why have two registrations if not necessary for her..... anyway, that was the basis of my guess.

Thanks.
