Hi All,
I think I asked this before but I can't find the thread; please forgive my memory challenged old brain! We are replacing our very old Serta mattress. We are thinking of a Temperpedic(sp?) mattress or the Sleep Number one.
We both have bad backs and I have an all over pain problem and often wake up because of pain. That is why I am thinking the Temperpedic would be our best bet. My sister got one and returned it because she said when you roll over and it makes an indentation and then your roll again, it takes too long for the indentation to fill back in, so to speak, and she said that was a problem for her. My elderly parents have one and they love it.
Would love to hear what my chronic pain friends have found for their best bed.
Thanks, Diandra

mattress Is a hard thing to buy. Cause you can't return it. As for the number beds I have heard nothing but very bad things about them. I was thinking of getting one. But after so many bad things about them I didn't get it. I still have mine it is not that old. But My back hurts so bad at night I can't move with out pain. I have tryed every thing under the sun for topper. Nothing works. I was just throwing money out the window. Good luck finding what you did.

I am going to sound like a commercial BUT ...
We bought a sleep number bed a few months ago... 7000 series... I bought it for Barb... me ... I can - and have - slept just about anywhere... Before we got the bed ... I would come to bed at night and on those "rough nights" I would find her asleep at all angles on our king bed ... often a lot on my side.. so I would go sleep on the futon...
A few days after we got the bed .. I noticed that MY BACK wasn't hurting/stiff in the AM and since we got the bed ... she has not been on my side of the bed sleeping.. of course .. she is all over the "number spectrum" on different nights...but she can adjust the bed for whatever feels right at the moment.
Our daughter and son-in-law was home a month ago - they both have some health problems -- they fell in love with our sleep number bed ... so they have just moved into a new apartment - where a king would fit ... we gave me a 7000 series bed as a house warming and untold number of future birthday gifts. Last we heard .. they couldn't be happier with it.
Our experience .. everything they say on the commercials ... IS TRUE!!
The 7000 series is next to the top of the line.. the top of the line has a temperpedic type part... which tends to retain heat and I could not figure out the benefit of an adjustable bed .. if you were you have a couple of inches of temperpedic layer between you and the air mattress.
BTW .. our 15 lb Shih-Tzu likes it set on 25.. as soon as I get up in the AM ..he heads right for in front edge of my pillows. Last week Barb had upper respiratory .. so I slept on the futon .. when she got over it and I went back to the bed ... if looks could kill ... he was not happy that he had "lost his spot"
They are not cheap .. but .. we feel that they are worth every cent...

Pharmacist Steve You are the first person I have heard they liked this bed. I had heard that they mold for some reason. That is why I quite even looking at them. Maybe we should look again into it.

I have not tried a sleep number before - only regular mattresses and Tempurpedics.
Although, when I go on vacation, I take an air mattress and cover it with a foam top and I usually sleep really well on that. But it may be because I am on vacation.
I have had my Tempurpedic for 7 years and I have inflammatory arthritis in knees, hips, spine, feet, etc.
There are times when my body just HURTS no matter what I am laying on.
But....by and large, the foam feels very good and doesn't put pressure on the joints.
I used to sleep better when my disease wasn't as bad as it is now.
But the mattress is still in great condition- 7 years later.

Mine is similar to GG's...has something like a Tempurpedic base with a six inch pillow top. Soooo...it is fat LOL! It was the first thing I bought when I retired and I love it! And, nope, no identations; had it since 2005. And I agree, takes the pressure off those pressure points. :)

Let's see...how to put this...I LOVE MY BED!!!! I don't get to spend nearly as much time in it anymore!!
I have the middle model of the sleep number beds. I'm guessing I've had it about 2 years now. It's so comfortable! It's gotten to the point now where I haven't touched the remote in months. I don't even know where I put it. I have a dual-chamber bed, and actually sleep in between the two and have no issues with the "in between" area. I can't tell you the difference this bed has made. My old mattress was so beaten up that when you sat on it, it scrunched all the way down to where you were sitting and lying on the box spring. So the change was amazing! It was so easy to set up and so easy to maintain. Push comes to shove, I can take off the pillow top and wash it. Also, because it comes off, if I have an issue (I keep tearing through the foam pads on these things, but it's because of the way I sit down on my bed sometimes. All I had to do is email the company, and in a few days, I have a new foam pad, put it right in and voila, perfection.) it's really easy to fix.
I love the select comfort beds. They really help with my back and I don't wake up nearly as stiff as I used to. And it's comfortble no matter how I lie on it. I can't say it'll be perfect for you, but it's great for me!

I currently have just a regular mattress.
However, when my DH and I first moved to the area we are living in we stayed in a hotel for 6 days (before we found an apartment) that happend to have beds with those temperpedic (sp ?) mattresses. I absoloutly hated it. It felt like a sponge that you just got sinked into and had no real flexibility-- when I needed to roll or change positions I just got sucked into the mattress even further. No "change" in comfort level from laying different ways. It just completely drove me nuts; and in a strange way was kinda scary too-- being that I have seizure, I wondered what would happen if the front of my face fell into the bed.
Good Luck in whatever you decided !

I have one of the NASA memory foam mattress's and I do love it. It wasn't outragous in cost and it has been so much better than other beds I have had in my lifetime.
I do have a friend that has a sleep number bed and she is in love with it. I think when the time comes I will buy one of those since I've heard so many wonderful things about them.
Good luck on making your decision!!!

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread.
But Steve...I just noticed what you said about your Shih Tzu. Mine does the same thing....and always at the edge of my pillow...her spot. Sometimes she won't move at all when I try to get into bed. I don't know about other dogs but these Shih Tzu's like anything that is soft, puffy and fluffy. :) Oh, and I just have to say it. I do have a couple of small blankets that I put on the floor for them...since they like it so much. I had washed one the other day and evidently a Bounce dryer sheet was stuck to the back of it and I didn't see it. So, the littlest pup evidently shredded it and ate it before I could get it all out of his mouth. He saw me coming and gulped it down. But in the long run...it was alright. :D I guess my point is...they find the smallest of things or the strangest of things and try to drag them into their blankets with them. I don't know how many times I have found buried little treats in the folds of blankets! :)
Okay, back to the thread. I just thought it was cute when you mentioned your dog. I know how they can be. :)

I haven't been here very much lately, not doing so well, but I planned to stop today to ask about beds. I have heard a lot of mixed feelings about the memory foam and also that they are not the best for those that are overweight and they tend to take a bit when you change positions for the original mold of your body to reagain it's shape. I have been seriously looking at the Sleep Number and had planned to ask if anyone here had any experience but lol I guess I just got my answer. I know there is a store near me so I guess I will need to go and see for myself. Very pricey but with a 20 year warranty you can't beat that. Thanks all.

I heard they are hollow and when you sit on the edge of the bed it is hard and cold. I would go to a motel and sleep on one first . thats alot of money to be putting out.

Cristina--
I second what Rozia said about trying them out at hotel-- at least the memory foam ones. When we lived in WA state, my dh got them to send us a sample of the foam material stuff and I didn't really have an opinion on it either way. But, when we just so happend to stay at hotel that had tempurpedic beds I found out very quickly that it wasn't the type of bed for me--and we were at that hotel for 6 nights, lol.
To the OP--
Good luck in finding the best type of bed/mattress !

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your input....as always I really appreciate it. To those who have mentioned the cost and you can't return it, actually you can. You only have to pay for shipping it back on both the Tempurpedic and the Sleep Number.
My sister who bought the Tempurpedic did send it back.
It is so interesting all the different input. I read consumer reports and they did say that your really have to try them out, that everyone is different.
Good idea to try them at a hotel although, how do you know what brand it is?. I know I slept on a great mattress at a B&B and the mattress was zipped into a one piece cover with the zipper at the top and I would have had to take it off the entire mattress to see what it was so I said forget it.
I did not know there was Nasa memory foam mattress, thanks for bringing that up. I will try that also.
Again, thanks for all the input, please do keep it coming as it really does help with the decision and when I am looking at those two particular mattresses in Kingsize, it really is quite an investment.
Hope you are all having a good Sunday. Just as an aside, we just went to see the new Halle Berry movie with Benecio Del Toro, it was excellent.
All my best, Diandra

I think that Raddisson is featuring the Sleep Number bed... I have not seen any advertising about any hotel featuring the Tempurpedic.
The Sleep Number bed has a 30 DAY return policy

The Holiday Inn dh and I stayed at had the mattress very clearly labeled "Temperpedic" and had one of those phamphlets on the table "introducing" the new beds (mattress) they were using..... ;)

When I bought my Tempurpedic in 2000, it had a 90-day return policy.
The first 2 weeks, my back hurt more than on my old mattress.
I called the store and the woman suggested I give it a couple more weeks, and to remove the cover so it would soften up the foam a bit faster.
I am glad I did - at about the 4 week mark, my spine adjusted to the new type of support, and the foam softened up just a bit.

I have family that have tried the tempurpedic and they didn't like it. so I am really interested in the sleep number. It is hard trying to find something that doesn't have the memory foam. Even most of the bed toppers that I have seen have it in them. Also want to try one of the contour pillows for neck support but I am one of those who sleeps with 2 to 3 pillows and am a hugger so maybe one contour pillow and one to hug lol. I don't know, but something needs to be done soon. Things are getting worse.
I have also found a website that has what they call Intelligel mattress toppers. There aren't any in my state. I wonder if they would send me a sample.

Wow Deb! Thanks. That should be called, "Everything you ever wanted to know about mattresses but were afraid to ask." That was really helpful. Never would I have thought that a Tempurdic mattress had a smell that had to dissipate. Very interesting.
Thanks so much,
Diandra
I've had a Sleep Number bed for a number of years and it alleviates my pain almost completely. The problem is that my husband HATES this bed. He prefers a springy bouncy bed. We've reached the point that I cannot sleep on our bed and he will not sleep in the SN bed, now relegated to the guest room. We do not want separate beds, so are considering creative options. Does anyone know if it is possible to put a SN X-Long Twin mattress beside a regular X-Long Twin mattress with a King sized topper?
