I curious why it is when I eat a sugar rock or rock candy it gets rid of nausea that hits when I use my inhaler (Butorphanol).

Is there something about sugar that neutralizes something? the unwanted effect (or sickening feeling)?

I've tried a lot of things, but sucking on a piece of the sugar takes care of the quesy/queasy (sp?) feeling and gets rid of the nasty taste real fast. The other thing I've found that helps is having a glass of water at-hand and quickly sipping it some with a straw after eating a bit of a cracker. But the sugar works so much faster and without fail.

Normally sugar produces more acid in the stomach.. which could produce more N/V.. but if it works ...

Bobbi,

I say if it works then continue to use it. Everyone is so different and if we are lucky enough to find something that works then I feel we are blessed.

substance in the stomach shuts down the nausea receptor.

This is why coca cola syrup and other anti-nausea OTCs (Emetrol) work a little.

These work best concentrated. Diluted with water, gives lower response.

I find ginger extract in capsule form to be stronger for nausea than
Coke syrup.

The concentrated syrups seem good for stomach induced nausea..like stomach viruses and food borne illnesses.

Ginger extract seems to have centrally acting properties, and has been found comparable in some studies to Zofran.
It is also good for motion sickness. It is very inexpensive for the benefits it gives back.
One needs to take the capsule with at least 4 oz of water or more. And remain upright for at least 1/2 hr. It will
reflux back and burn if you lie down right away.
