Sorry bout this...but I am wondering if anyone has had experience with stenotic nares resection for their dogs/pups? Both pups were neutered on the 11th; the youngest one had the nares resection and both had puppy teeth (canines) that had to be pulled (saw the roots on those and no wonder!).

Anyway, they are both on Rimadyl and seem to be doing fine with neutering and the tooth pulling bit. But the younger one is having trouble breathing; the snorts and such are worse. I am thinking it is probably inflammation and will take awhile. The Vet did say they could add something for the pain if Rimadyl wasn't enough.

I have listened and felt his chest and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his lungs...it is all nasal. And I don't see any signs of infection...just clear drainage. He is eating...just not himself and of course I wouldn't want be either after all that!

Anyway, I TEND to think it is normal even if it sounds bad. Just wondering if I am worrying for nothing or if anyone knows if this is normal post op. Or if there is anything I can do to help him.

I will go ahead and call the Vet just to let him know what is going on. I had this same thing done for my older female but it has been so long ago I can't remember if she had trouble or not...I just don't recall it.

Thanks!

Kathi,

Sorry to hear the pup is having such a time, you must have your hands full.

I'm taking care of my son's puppy and have to have her spayed soon as I have to very big rowdy males in the house and can't imagine what that could cause.

I looked up the side effects of the Rimadyl and didn't see that as one, I can only say of my personal opinion I find that a hard med on dogs, of course they say it's harder on older ones then the young ones.

Good to call the vet in the morning and advice him of what is happening, how long are they suppose to be on the Rimadyl ?

Anyway let us know how they do and good luck.

Linda

Kathi,

Sorry I hadn't answered you before now, but honestly I don't have an answer for you. I will say it sounds like your hands are full and a call to the vet should be your next move.

Let us know how the pups are doing!! I just love animals!!!!!!

Kathi, can't say i really know but would guess your diagnosis is correct and he will get better as the swelling goes down.

Thanks you guys,

I should have clarified. Rimadyl is only for 4 days for both pups. It is a doggie NSAID (for pain and inflammation). I FINALLY was able to get a hold of my niece and she told me it was more than likely inflammation...just to give it a few days I should see or hear the nasal sounds subside. I was just worried yesterday morning because he was having a hard time. But...later on he was more active and the nasal sounds weren't as bad. And he is eating like a little pig then passes out to sleep LOL! I do feel sorry for him though. It occurred to me later how rough nasal surgery is.

I have had it done for a deviated septum when I was in my early 20's. Not fun!!! I know, I know beside the point really. But I do remember the docs telling me not to panic when I woke up if I couldn't breathe through my nose...it would be packed and to try to remember immediately to breathe through my mouth. Sure enough...I had that split second of panic. And...the worst part being having my nose and sinuses packed with tubes of cotton or whatever it was. I had no idea...I thought those little tubes were just in the nostrils. Uh, not...all sinuses were packed!!! And to walk around for about 10 days like that was horrible. Try having the urge to sneeze (due to the inflammation going down) and not being able to for fear your head would blow up! The pressure was intense! But in the long run...it was the best thing I had done to date LOL! I have not had major sore throats or bad sinus infections since then.

Anyway, sorry, I am just saying I feel for him because I can kind of relate to how it must feel.

Linda,

Get ready for the spaying. It is harder on the females I think than the neutering on the males. And I am just referring to my own female. She was feeling pretty rough for about 3-4 days and then got better. And back then I don't think they gave her Rimadyl. I believe it was something stronger because it really knocked her out. Which was a good thing so she would sleep most of the time. And she had the same nasal surgery...I just don't remember that part being as hard on her.

As for the other pup...he acts like nothing was ever done! :) I have to keep him crated most of the time otherwise he will try to jump up on the couch or wants to play with the one that isn't feeling too good.

Anyway, thanks again you guys...I will just keep an eye on him and hope he gets better within the next few days.
