My mom had a SAH from an aneurysm 10 days ago. She had a clipping the following day and seemed pretty oriented and coherent until about 5 days ago. Now it seems she is in and out of disorientation and confusion. The doctor thinks this may be due to several factors..fever, sleep deprivation, icu psychosis,& vasospasms. I was just wondering if this was common in other people's experiences and how they fared.

Hi Melissmiss - I am sorry to hear that your Mom is going through this but I am glad you found us - hopefully we can give you alittle insight. I also had a rupture and once I regained consciousness (about 2 days later) I seemed to be doing allright. Then I got hit with vasospasms and fever and went downhill for awhile, my family said they really were scared for me all over again.

Ten days is very early in the recovery period after a rupture...I did'nt get out of intensive care for 15 days and then was in the neurological area for awhile after that.

I remember absolutely nothing of those days! My family says that is a blessing! The best thing for you to do is be there as much as you can and keep an eye on things that she may need. It takes a long time to recover and my prayers will be with you and your Mom.

Martie

Hi
My husband went thru what your mom is... he was out for a longer time and he had a lot of complications following with infection.. He was really disorientated for the first month while he was at the rehab... he didn't even recongize me when he was wheeled passed me... couldn't tell you the President or the day of the week... he has come along way since but he still has trouble with the day of the week he has short term loss and some long term but some of it is coming back at least now he knows he has memory problems as at first I don't think he knew what was happening.
It takes a long time to heal its been just over 9 months now.. He had his clipped but it was five days later... they had to get him stable enough to go thru it.
Just be there for her and help her through it... If you want to talk I'm here
Becky:)

:o I am sorry to hear about your Mom!! I had a rupture June 05, next to my left optical artery. I had a long story, but bottom line is I went untreated too long so I have an extended healing process. I still deal with a lot of confusion, short term memory, coordination and processing information... It is normal with many of us!! There is a workbook called the "Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Workbook", it help me and my family learn a lot about this!! It gives recovery tips... You can find it in book stores & on line. Word circle games, scrabble... anything that stimulates the brain is helpful for regenerating the brain. Drinking lots of water and getting a lot of sleep helps!! I take a lot of meds & they add to the confusion, but keep my headaches, emotions, sleep... under control! Love is still the best med!!! :) The brain takes a long time to heal! She will go through many phases of healing!! Just have patience and try to help her and encourage her all you can. It is going to take a while! Take care and keep us posted!! I will keep you in my prayers!! Tricia / Firefly

The doctor thinks this may be due to several factors..fever, sleep deprivation, icu psychosis,& vasospasms. I went through the same thing for weeks while in the hospital (my family told me because I don't remember any of it). My confussion slowly went away when I went to rehab. The rehab hospital had put me on meds for the psychosis and just being in an quiet place helped. Your mom sounds like she is going through the normal steps.
Hang in there it should get better but it will be one step forward and two back for awhile. Dawn
