View Full Version : Lyrica- it almost killed me -this is not a joke

Hi everyone,

I usually post on the other forums: RSD, fibromyalgia, chronic pain etc.

But I think that what happened to me needs to be told.

First some background : In 2004 I was diagnosed with bird fanciers disease - which means I had a hypersensitive reacton to an allergin in the feather dust of our 4 parrots. My lungs were full of fibrous crap and they were scarred. We sold our parrots but I still did not get better until we moved out of the house. Within 3 weeks I was off the oxygen and had no breathing problems.

Fast forward: Last October my pain management doc srarted me on Lyrica. In order to get my insurance company to cover it they ordered the 200mg 3 times a day.

I could not take that much lyrica at first but I soon was able to tolerate it. It did help with my pain- espically my fibro pain. In late March I fell at my beside - did not trip or anything - I lost control of my arms and legs and went down seriously spraining my ankle.

A week or so later I was in the kitchen picked up a bowl and turned to put it on the counter -I lost control of my arms and dropped the bowl and then I went down-again with no control over my legs or arms also. BUT this time I fractured my ankle.

The next fall was in the garage(concrete floor) when we were going to get in the car- same type fall the concrete just scaraped my knee, elbow and face.

The falls continued I had a neurologist, spinal doc, ortho doc, and rheumatologist trying to figure this out. All the tests came back normal. It seem though, the more fall I had, the worse they were.

There there were falls that were different- I felt different- like I could not breath or at least get enough air in my lungs. Then we knew what was causing the falls- my pulse oximeter reading was 79 and after another fall it was 83. Normal is 95% or higher.

Before I could get into the see my pulmonary doc- the falls changed and it appeared that my muscles in my legs and arms did not want to move- everytime I tried to get up they woukd spasm also. I actually fell in our back yard -at least it was on the grass. Everytime I tried to move my muscles would spasm -I am sure it was because I was getting even less O2. It took a better part of an hour to get me up off the ground. But it really got scarey when Hubby tried to pick me up and my extremities were spasming so bad I thought I would go into a seizure next.

I immediately made an appointmet with my pulmonary doc. We went over what had happened and he did not know what could be causing the fall- untill we went over my meds.

He was extremely upset I was on Lyrica. He then told me that he has seen his patients as well emergency room patients that QUIT BREATHING while on Lyrica. He wanted me to quit it ASAP. I knew I couldn't stop cold turkey - my Rheum. doc told me if I quit cold turkey I could have seizures.

While the PDR lists the following as RARE problem of the respiratory system -Apnea, atelectasis, bronchiolotis, hiccup, laryngismus, lung edema, lung fibrosis, yawn but none of my doctors (espically those who would be prescribing the med) had heard anything about any respiratory problems caused by Lyrica.

I weaned myself off the lyrica, my O2 sats are back to normal (98%) and I feel so much better. The only problem is that noone gave me anything to replace the Lyrica so now my pain levels arew up.

I would think that lyrice could be prescribed to anyone whose has any type of an obstructive lung problem.

But there are also other adverse effects- Lyric makes you gain weight - and I did- between 30-40 lbs - but now it is coming off slowly.

There is another one that normally happens while on lyrica- hair loss- but my hair became thicker and fuller - and now that I am off the lyrica, I have thinning hair that is also breaking off.

Well, I just wanted to share this part of my life to hopefully keep someone else to end up with the same problems I did.

Wow, Leslie, I am sorry you had to go through such a scary reaction!!
It is truly amazing what these drugs can do, I guess it's really a crapshoot.
I am currently looking for another pain med because I stopped Pamelor for the weight gain reason. That can be debilitating also and I never understood that till it happened to me.

Anyway. Lyrica is another one suggested to me but I had already heard about the weight gain.

Thanks for posting this. You never know who is going to have the "rare" reaction.

Take care,
Deb

I too just recently went off of Lyrica. 75mg 2x a day. 18 days of migraines and I couldn't stop eating. I didn't know that weight gain was a possibility. I had lost 10lbs just before I started it as I have a weight problem and chronic pain so need to lose a lot. Was not happy and I know I have gained it all back. I tend to be med intolerant and with fibro and pain and bipolar II it is hard to find meds. Thanks for the post.

I had to go off Lyrica 75mg 2 x's day. Gained lots of weight, yet bigest problem was badly swollen legs and lots of brain fog. Already had some brain damage from a wreck and the Lyrica seemed to make it worse.

I just found this forum and read this thread and had to post...I also had a hard time breathing when my rheumy tried Lyrica on me. I took it for 1 day, and had such a hard time breathing that I was using my inhaler every hour. ( I also have asthma, but it is slight and hardly ever use inhaler ) I didn't take it after that first day, and when I went back to my rheumy and told him my reaction, he said, "hhhmmm, really? that's not a side effect?" and I just said "well, it is for me". he just made a weird face. Needless to say, I ditched that doc, and finally was diagnosed by a Neuro with Chronic Reactive EBV. but I just needed to vent, because just because it's not a listed side effect, doesn't mean it can't happen. maybe it's just a side effect for people who have lung or bronchial issues.

I was so glad to read that someone else has had these strange reactions to Lyrica. My Pain Dr. started me on it about 3 mos. ago, and it worked so well for my FMS I was really impressed. But, I started noticing swelling in my ankles and basically everywhere on my body. My breathing was compromised as was my sense of balance.
For 2 mos. in a row I had mentioned these things to him (also gaining 25 lbs.), and he acted as though it was nothing to worry about and said as much. Well, my last visit to him the nurse took my vitals and my blood pressure was higher than it had ever been in my life. When I mentioned this to her she looked at my previous visit and blood pressure had been even higher. I have been unable to sleep for 3 mos. but attributed it to anxiety as I am also trying to pack up my house to move.
Now I am darn near sure it is from the Lyrica as all of these symptoms started after my taking the medication. He started me on 100 mg. 2x's a day, then moved that up to 150 mg. 2x's a day. The side efffects have gotten worse as my dosage has increased.
Another thing that has happened is that my legs seem to go out from under me for no apparent reason, so that when it was mentioned about the muscle spasms I can also relate. I am in the process of getting another pain mgmt. Dr. because of this and other issues I have with him, but wanted others to beware of these reactions to Lyrica.

Wow.

My daughter had many adverse reactions (some permanent) to so many different meds. Talking about falling and oxygen really caught my eye since she used to fall and fall and fall - had ataxia, got concussions, scrapes, injuries... and yes - she was on meds and nobody ever said they might be causing it although it "could cause dizziness". She had low blood pressure -- sometimes VERY LOW.

I was also upset later to find that different meds (like for hormones rather than the psychotropics prescribed), supplements & dietary changes were more appropriate for her... and definitely less risky.

Thank you for bothering to share with the rest of us your experience.

Doctors do seem to dispense meds like candy, and I was honestly quite ignorant about the severity of the risks. Also, I thought we had "no choice."

I realize this is an old thread, but i was just put on Lyrica as an additonal Seizure med..supplimentary to my other two seizure meds..100mg a day... so far so good. I am so sorry to hear about your problems... Thanks for the heads up.. I hate having grand mal seizures as I have a malignant brain tumor and know what muscular loss and falling down feels like at a whim...but hmmm...I know that this drug is used for at least four different ailments. Funny. My major seizure med is Topimax which is used for Migranes, as I am allergic to most standard seizure meds. Maybe I am just backwards. Thanks for the info.
