I love sports and I played soccer all the way through high school and shoot basketball on occasions. If you like sports feel free to send me a message and we will talk. They had a problem with me playing soccer because of my shunt. I played basketball and dove into bleachers and everything and then they had to tell me I couldn't play soccer because of my shunt, how stupid. I explained to them what it was and they still have to call the ns to make sure, I think that is crazy, that they couldn't take my word for it.

Now this is what I was talking about and is very interesting to us with shunt kids.

Now I realize that my hemiplegic hydro daughter will likely not be such an athlete (though she is just finishing her first soccer season) - I find it interesting that basketball was not an issue, but soccer is.

I was a soccer player!

I think that maybe your soccer coach took the school liability for something happening to you more seriously than your basketball coach here.

I hope you find a way to play regardless - and that your NS gave the green light.

I've wondered about soccer too.

In my day--shunted first in 1969-- I think docs were pretty cautious as far as limiting those with hydro..my mom was pretty protective of me. She jokes that I didn't even cross the street on my own until I was 12...I'm not sure whether I find that joke funny now or not!

I think in the end, the protectiveness saved me from having shunt surguries due to injury but I've also grown into a pretty cautious person as far as physical risktaking. I've never been into rollercoasters, and I'm scared of heights and things like snowmobiling or downhill anything.

I have taken risks in other areas however..going to school, graduating from college before any of my sibling even though I am the 3rd out of four, traveling overseas on my own, working in other states, and also eventually moving 1500 miles away from my family whereas everyone else lives within a two hour drive of one another! Sometimes you just have to get away....LOL.

Jennifer, have you ever ridden them? Do you like them? My daughter CAN NOT STAND most amusement park rides. The speed and the spinning really seem to give her problems, which is kind of sad since the rest of the family likes them so much. (well, her dad and her sister do, not so much me -- so I'm okay with staying on the ground with her and finding some place to get ice cream!)

Well, my daughter wants me to get breakfast for her RIGHT NOW, so I have to go.

Take care!

Hi Amanda,
You may have been speaking to me about the amusement rides.

I have been on a few when I was younger, and they absolutely freaked me out...I remember when I was a senior in high school and a couple of my friends literally DRAGGED me on a big roller coaster in Disney World...I practically went limp when I cam off the ride. That was my last roller coaster ride.

My balance has always been a little off, and I get really dizzy and feel kind of sickened from rides in general. I don't enjoy that feeling although I think some people do.

My last BF loved rollercoasters, but he pretty much knew never to drag me on one...For the most part he was pretty good not to push me into thing but I think that in the end, his need for speed and my NOT, was an obstacle we coudn't get over...

He was a real adrenaline junkie and we recently broke up after several years together..

The G-force from rollercoasters makes them more dangerous for us than for others, but truthfully, I don't think anyone should ride them. I know they're news because they don't happen all the time, but I'm sure you have all heard the same stories I have about people dying from undx'ed conditions after going on these rides. Certainly, if you have a condition that poses an additional risk to you, you should not participate in these activities.

Just my $.02,

LIZARD :)

Roller Coasters make my head hurt.

Hey Lizard, glad you are now talking to me. Roller Coasters scare the day lights out of me, especially when they go around a big curve or down a big hill. What about you? I can't stand the pressure on my head. My neurosurgeon has never said anything about them though.

Who is going to win the World Series? Who is going to win the Nextel Cup in Nascar? Who is going to win the Stanley Cup? Who is going to win the NBA championship? Who is going to win the Super Bowl, and for all of us Canadians, who is going to win the Grey Cup??

Are you a sports fan? Will you continue to talk to me and not be like everyone else. I am a New England Patriot Fan and I hope they win the Super Bowl. I hope to see Saint Louis win the world series and I am a Dale Earnhardt fan. I like Football and Basketball the most. I used to play soccer, but I would rather watch it, than play it. Just went to your website, it was great. I never seen where you finished college, Did you? I like Detroit Pistons

My favorite sports are....whatever my daughters are competing in! Right now it's swim team for the youngest, we have to travel out of town this weekend for her next meet. Marijke thinks that whatever she can play on her playstation is a sport, and she gets REALLY involved with it, jumping around and stuff, so I guess it could qualify.

I like watching football, my favorite college team is Texas A&M (Gig `em, Aggies!!), my favorite pro team is the Texans (they beat Jacksonville -- Woo-Hoo!! We finally have a win!!).

Jennifer, do you like to read or watch movies? What are your favorites?

Jennifer,

I graduated college in 1993, a year after being diagnosed with syringomyelia, a cyst in the spine. My neurosurgeon at the time told me to go home and don't use my arms. Instead I finished my college courses and graduated and started working for a large hotel franchising company.

people talk when they have time - not when you demand it - what are you 7?

Jennifer I agree with Ozzie. You need to relax. I was just like you awhile ago and believe me people will disappear from your life more than they will appear in your life. So, take it easy and enjoy life. Stop forcing people to do what you want.
