We had a discussion going on one of the other threads about triggers and i can't remember where it was, so here's a new thread.

I discovered that any type of acidic food sets me off. Others were pointing out different fruits that they knew off and at first, I was kind of surprised, but then some days it doesn't take much (drugs...). Anyway, without thinking about it, I was eating some acidic fruits this week and it hit me  , acid, acid, acid! This was also aggravated by eating tomatos.

Hence, my major light bulb moment this week.
Cheers all, E!

I don't believe I've heard that food can be a trigger, see what you can learn here much more than any doctors office.
My triggers are cold, when I have to turn my heat on for the winter, dust, and the good all stress. Winter is always worst for me.
Well lets see what everyone else comes up with

I agree that certain foods trigger attacks. Acidic foods are definately bad bets for me, as are anything powdery - flavored corn chips etc. Really sweet foods do the same too, which is a shame as I am addicted to chocolate and krispy kremes!

Things I can eat without pain include fatty foods - cheese, butter, steak etc. Strangely enough, chewing gum doesn't set me off either.

Cheers,

Grant

Gee I miss pickles. Now that I can't eat them, I can't even make them. In fact, I had a few months when if I bit into a cucumber I got a shock. All I could figure was that my brain was making the connection to pickles - stupid? But yes, Grant, I'm also unable to eat the really sweet things, I could go for a krispy kreme right now, haven't had anything like that in a long time. Thank goodness hot stuff is ok, I sure eat a lot of hot peppers. I even eat the pickled hot banana peppers, but I have to give them a long soak in hot water to get the vinegar out. I was at a meeting where they had taken a lunch break and given us all our sandwich plates - gee, now, who'd expect to find that they had stuffed pickle slices in egg salad sandwiches? That blur was me, leaving the room, not even stopping to say excuse me, looking for a quiet corner to sit and wait it out. Someday we'll have a virtual dinner party here online, what a menu that will be. Nancy

So far, pickles aren't a problem for me. I have noticed this weekend that my stupid tooth that had a root canal done on and finally had a permanent cap put on it, is still a trigger. When things are crazy (as my life has been these past couple of months), all I have to do is move my face and it sets it off. Hit it with my tongue, etc., this stuff is really bizarre.

Later all!

It dawned on me after two years of TN pain that food acid might be triggering shocks. To test my hypothesis, I bought a roll of TUMS antacid and tried chewing them before, during and after eating acid-y foods.

My experiment worked-- TUMS instantly neutralized the acid and, for a few minutes, stopped the triggering.

Disclaimer: I have no connection to the TUMS company, and I do not like the way they taste with food.

Good luck,
Alan W.

Hi all, I couldn't eat pickles or beets, anything with vinegar. As Nancy said, any food that gets the saliva going triggers the TN.
I can eat them now, but am paranoid each time.
Unfortunately I can still eat chocolate to my heart's content! Thank goodness for the south beach diet:)

For me, it's not so much the food as the temperature. I can't eat or drink anything hot. Food has to cool down, I put ice cubes in hot coffee and hot tea, etc... I can eat and drink once it becomes just warm, but anything hotter than that sends me howling.

The worst trigger I have is brushing my teeth and biting into food. Meds do not control it and I have to be very careful about how I eat. My biggest worry is that my teeth on my left side remain as healthy as possible. I went through the worst attack of my TN career about 1.5 months ago and I've been taking 600 mgs of tegretol. Any amount over that and I can't work at all. I get dizzy spells. So I have a lot of breakthrough pain. However, I enjoy eating and love food so I try to eat everything but very slowly.
I long for a remission....:(

Toothache, I feel for you! I can remember like it was yesterday, the first time the big bolt of lightening hit me. I didn't think it would ever stop and recall putting an ice brick on my jaw following it. It was around 5:30 am and I just took my first sip of morning coffee and  it set it off. My DH isn't usually up at that hour and I guess I must have screamed, cried out, moaned, whatever, cause he woke up and came out to me. I don't think I'll ever forget that! Funny thing now, hot liquid hasn't been affecting me much since I've been on the meds! Go figure!!!!
Breathing in cold air gets it going though. i haven't had any trouble lately with cold liquids.

Sweet, painless dreams all! Ellena

Before and even for a while after my MVD. I had to eat everything at room temperature. Coffee had an ice cube in it, so did soup. Ice cream was not a possibility and I always wore a couple of scarves when I had to go out in the winter. Cold air on my teeth was an immediate zap! That's why I thought for so long that it was a tooth issue.

Ok all - you can thump me if you want to, but I'm posting just to keep this thread alive so the next light bulb moment I have is preserved here(sort of) to help us all and any newcomers to BT.
Me myself, no new triggers yet this week, but the week is young!

Cheers, E!

Well I'm having a heck of a morning! New trigger - right front tooth  and the tip of my lip! Joy, as long as I feel pain, I know I'm still alive. Of course, talking and laughing or yawning are out of the question. This is truely a unique condition.

Anyone else?
E!

Tomatoes-big triggers. [So no pizza or spaghetti marinara]
Oranges, grapefruits-bad. Also their juices are bad.
Diluted lemon juice in tea or lemonade are OK
Onions bad
Coffee & regular tea-bad

Interestingly enough I had problems with coffee. Anything caffenated seem to trigger my pain and make it worse. I say stay away from anything YOU personally think will irritate your own body. Trust your instincts, everyone is different and has a different makeup. Your body will tell you what to avoid.
