View Full Version : Fasting for colonscopy?
It's been a while since I've been here but it's nice to see familiar faces still around (Hi Cindybear, ChrisC, Suzanne and others!). I am back with a question that I'm hoping someone here can help me with.
My husband had bypass surgery for a giant unruptured annie a year and a half ago. Before he was released from the hospital, one of the instructions he was given was "no fasting, ever!'. He was also told to drink lots of fluids and not wear himself out physically.
Now he has a colonscopy scheduled for November (just part of a routine check-up), and the day before he is supposed to drink just liquids (juices, broths, water etc), no solid food, and then after midnight he is not to drink anything. I'm worried. Do you think that just drinking liquids for a day qualifies as 'fasting'?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi Bina, :p
Glad Hubby is still going great...I'd thank, I'd e-mail his Docter (neurosurgeon) a fast e-mail...I'm pretty sure it will be O.K. for this one procedure...As long as it wasn't a long fast...I tell you, I had one not to long ago and it was a nightmare for me....!!! They did my whole colon. and said I would be in a twightlight sleep and would not remember anything...I remember it all...It was horrible...!!!But, I'm on narcotics for years ( but I told this to them ) and the meds did not help me...I watched the whole procedure on the TV screen..They took out (burned ) 4 polylps...And every curve they went around was horrible pain...If hubby is not on pain meds ..He'll probably be O.K. But people that are on them for awhile (CPers like me ) be careful..I'm suppose to have one every year..But I just can't ........Hugs, Hun. Cindy

Hi Bina,
Good to see you and good to hear your hubby is doing well.
I had to have a colonscopy and endoscopy last year and the prep was the worst part.
I was told I could also have jello, but no grape and it was another flavor I couldn't have don't remember which flavor.
However, I do agree with cindy and think it would be a good idea to contact dr. or someone in the office who would be able to answer your questions.
I also remember seeing my insides on the monitor and I remember saying wow my innards show are nice and clean LOL . Guess they gave me more versed because that is all I remember. I didn't have any pain during the procedure.
Hope all goes well for your hubby.

Hey Bina! Good to hear from you - I was wondering how you were doing! I had just been looking at pics from Boston last year! I agree - just contact the doc and tell them what you were told and get their opinion. Best of luck to him!

Hi Bina, Glad to hear your husband is doing well. I had one about a year or so ago, it was a piece of cake! The prep is the worst part, but have I no memory at all of the actual procedure. They knocked me out and I woke up with a nurse asking me how I was.:) Just make sure he tells them that he wants to be totally asleep. The feeling afterwards of knowing you are checked and all is well, is definitely worth it. I would call and check with the doc too, just to be safe. Good luck to him and hope he gets a clean bill of health! :) Kim
P.S. No RED Jello, Gatorade, etc.
