Guys, you may remember me reporting last year a drop in my PSA from 4.0 to 2.4, with the only change I know of being GF. I just got my blood work for this year, and it is now 1.8. I can't prove it, but I believe that being GF may be causing this.

Hey, my urologist saw me before and after the GFD! I had both prostatitis and interstitial cystitis symptoms. Trying the GFD for other reasons, these both 'accidently' cleared up. :D While my primary doctor was thoroughly unsupportive of the GFD, my urologist said, “Keep Doing whatever you are doing!”
My pain greatly reduced, PSA went from .9 to .6 (not much), size went from 40g to 25g (roughly).
The simplest theory is that the colon inflammation secondary to the malabsorption secondary to the gluten enteritis cross-inflames your prostate setting you up for biofilm infections in that organ. Alternatively, the gluten sensitivity could have set you up for progressive autoimmunities.
Basicly, gluten sensitivity can get you in any organ with concentrations of capilaries.

Oops, I peeked  ;)
Nothing surpirises me when it comes to "the gluten connection". Of course I started googling to see if I could find more. The only thing I came up with was this reference and it is only a title of a letter. :(
Lancet. 1998 May 23;351(9115):1559-60.

Congratulations to both of you on the improvement. :D

I peeked, too. I'm waiting for Mr. Kay to come home from work (he's always late Friday night and it's been a looooong week) to pass on the news to him. His grandfather died of prostate cancer.
In semi-related news, Mr. Kay went to the dentist yesterday. He said he hasn't been flossing as regularly since the last visit. However, he had *less* placque build-up on his teeth and he's attributing it to his low gluten diet. (I haven't been able to convince him to give up gluten completely.) I'm not sure if the reduced placque has anything to do with low-gluten... but if he wants to give it credit, I'll take it. Anything to get him off gluten.

LOL - I also like to walk through doors that say "restricted".
Kathy - I have noticed that I don't have anywhere near the plaque buildup on my teeth now. A dental cleaning use to be real torture for me - painful and bleeding gums. Now it is easy. Gluten related? I think it is.

Women have paritally developed prostate tissues -- same antibody profile.

Plaque:
My understanding is that dental plaque is from the starch, rather from the gluten. Well, the gluten helps the starch stick around, (glu'e) but the starch is pure sugar for the bacteria.

Alright Anne, am I going to be pulling you out of the men's restrooms in New York? :D Or maybe it will be you pulling me out...LOL...as you see this is the first post I went to after being gone!
I wanted to add that my father and brother both are DQ2 and DQ8 and both had prostrate cancer. My uncle/dad's brother also died of prostrate cancer so I am sure he had one or both celiac genes.

Woman have prostates    I never knew that and I would have never thought to google "women prostate" either. Wonder if female prostate cancer has ever been reported? I could not find this.
Plaque:
Since going on a GF diet my carb intake has been greatly decreased.

Anne: "Wonder if female prostate cancer has ever been reported?"
I wondered that too, I'll ask my Uro if he's ever heard of PSA scores for women.
My method, if I wanted to answer this would be to look though the articles I've collected for the conventional names of the prostatic tissues and look for articles on femine cancers in that area. I imagine that I'd find some cancers, but I'd also bet that they were >not< associated with the prostatic tissues in the vicinity!

Yeah, that's the first, sorry, second question on my "REAL Frequently Asked Questions! About the Gluten Free Diet and Celiac Disease." :)

I really should have said my processed grains have been greatly decreased. I am not sure my carbs are that low cause of the fruit and veges I eat. I also eat rice. I find I don't feel as well if I eat very many products with processed GF grains.
Anne
This weekend I will find some time to look over your website, Hal - looks good - thanks.

OZZ, For the benefit of surfers coming across this thread:
DQ2 and DQ8 are the well known (to us) HLA gene types for celiac disease.
