I have no idea what this is, and I DO plan on seeing my neurologist, but I was curious to see if anyone knows what this is...

I was sound of asleep last night, having a very calm dream. I bolted upright, wide awake, suddenly. It was not caused by the dream.

At the same time:

I felt a popping sensation in my head. Not on the surface, inside.

I saw random flashes of images, unrealted to each other, in rapid sucession. This lasted a few seconds.

I heard random sounds, unrealted to each other or the images, lasted a few seconds as well.

This has happened a few times, randomly, over the past year.

Any ideas?

I wonder if you are under a great deal of stress at the moment? Could this be associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Cheerio.

HI SquidMango,

This must be very strange for you. Are you completely awake after this happens? It is definitely weird that you would be having a calm dream when this happens. It sounds more like a person having a nightmare and have this happen to them, which I have been very close to this when I have had a very disturbing dream.:( I hope you will be going to a neurologist soon to find the answer. Please keep us posted as I am very interested in what would cause this. Good Luck!

Love,
Linda:)

I'm not sure about the popping sound, but the random images/sounds
may have been some sort of partial seizure. Have you been in to see
your neuro, yet?

Please keep us posted!

Many people who have had vessels rupture in the head hear or feel a popping sound followed by other symptoms of a bleed--mostly intense headache, dizziness, seizure, numbness, light flashes. Most of the time vessels rupture from an aneurysm but some people (like me) have bleeds with no evidence of aneurysm. I'd go to the ER soon after such an episode occurs. Most CT scans will pick up a bleed if the scan is done within 24 hours.

Most people with aneurysm progress to an emergency status after the rupture but many people who do not have an aneurysm experience the bleed and then it stops on it's own. Only about 10-15% of people with a bleed don't have aneurysms though. Many people with one aneurysm have more than one--most people with a non-aneurysm bleed only have the one.

I'm a nurse and I can tell you that most ER docs are worried about a rupture when they hear "worst headache of my life," or "something popped in my head and then these weird symptoms happened." Many times aneurysms are misdiagnosed or missed the first time(s) someone seeks help for symptoms, but a rupture is not an ambiguous thing, usually. They're picked up pretty quick and usually with just a CT scan.

Good luck!
