Hi all.NT dd is having swalllowing issues, which she just told me about yesterday..seems its been going on for a few weeks.I should have figured it out,it's taking a long time for her to eat and what she does eat isn't much.I feel like a really bad mom.I thought she was just getting back to her picky days.Went to Dr today.Want to have a Barium swallow done(yuck).Hopefully will get that done before school starts.I'm worried about her. When they weighed her today she was at 59lbs(a drop of 6lbls in about 6 weeks)Think I'm going to buy some Pediasure. She's at my moms for a sleepover tonight-didn't eat much dinner. She told my mom that her belly hurts every day and that she's scared to tell me-stomach issues in past-told it's just constipation. My mind is racing. What the heck is going on with her?..Sorry for the rambling just really needed to vent.

Have you looked into allergies? Last summer, Samantha complained that she was having trouble swallowing everytime she had strawberries. I had her stop eating them for a week or two, and then try them again. She picked up a strawberry and felt her throat tighten up before she got it to her mouth. This summer, she is fine with them. I'm not sure if it was the strawberries, or perhaps the pesticides? She has since discovered that peanut butter bothers her, and cinnamon. (She just retried the cinnamon. Seemed fine, but now she's having diarrhea, and we haven't changed anything else... Hopefully, she won't read this and shoot me.:p) Unfortunately, reactions can take up to 4 days to show up.

A good friend of mine told me that a picky eater can be a sign of food allergies.

If you can get some allergy tests run, see if you can get the delayed reaction IgG tests run, as well as the standard, immediate reaction IgE tests.

Claire will be 9 in October, also. Claire has a good friend (9 year old) who has migraines. Her mother has to be very careful in asking about her headaches (to determine if migraine, sinus, or ??? so to find out if she should give Tylenol or other, and whether she sends her to school, etc.) or she clams up so as not to worry her mom. She reminds me of your daughter.:o Anyway, I don't know that that helps, but maybe you'll feel better knowing it's not just your daughter.

Thanks Kathy.I didn't even think of allergies. The only thing that she has on a regular basis is milk.Has had bouts with lactose intolerence (if she has too much dairy in a day)I try to llimit the amount given to her.hmmmm....

I really started to write something about dairy... especially when you mentioned constipation and stomach ache. But, I was feeling like a broken record, so I didn't. Anyway... DAIRY IS EVIL! (And it takes six weeks to work its way out of your system. Get rid of all of it.)

First thing that came to mind for me was GERD or allergeries.

Hope you find answers quickly and it is easily treatable.

Also hope it is nothing serious...just reminded me that yesterday my son, nine on Friday, said he was having trouble swallowing...I immediately thought of allergies for him since he's sneezing so much right now and...he had an echinacea/green tea cough candy and it helped open it up he said. He has asthma too so I just thought the combination was making his throat a bit tight...it's occurred a couple times but not to the extent of your girl but one never knows.

is she physically finding it hard to push the food down and swallow or is her throat tight feeling so it is uncomfortable? My dad has 'zachary's rings' I think that's the name, and he could only take tiny bites...had a procedure to open it up ...not surgery...and is way better. Don't think he had tummy pain but am not surprised if she does from the stress of the pain and also from the hunger since she isn't eating as much as she is used to.

hugs,
lucinda

No advice here...just concern. It certainly sounds like she is trying very hard to protect you.

My mother had scleroderma with esophogeal (sp?) involvement. For years she had trouble swallowing...her esophagus was basically slowly closing (it was paralyzed). Originally, about every six months, she would have her esophagus "stretched". It was an outpatient procedure, in which she swallowed progressively larger tubes. It lasted about 6 months, and then she would have to go again. Then in later years the meds improved and she could go a few years between procedures. I'm sorry I don't know the meds.
