Gluten neuropathy - Hadjivassiliou

Dr. Hadjivassiliou does it again. This time an article showing improvement in those who chose a GF diet over those who didn't. The improvement was subjective and objective. These people had circulating antibodies - no reference to biopsy.

I know the GF diet made a tremendous diffenence in my PN. :cool: :D

Dietary treatment of gluten neuropathy.

We studied the effect of a gluten-free diet in patients with idiopathic sensorimotor axonal neuropathy and circulating antigliadin antibodies. Consecutive patients underwent baseline neurophysiological assessment and were offered a gluten-free diet. Those who went on the diet formed the intention-to-treat group and those who did not were the control group. Repeat neurophysiological assessment and subjective evaluation of neuropathy symptoms were performed at 1 year. A total of 35 patients participated in the study, with 25 patients going on the diet and 10 not doing so. There was a significant difference in the change of sural sensory action potentials (pre-defined primary endpoint), with evidence of improvement in the intention-to-treat group and deterioration in the control group. Subjective change in neuropathy symptoms also showed significant differences, with patients in the intention-to-treat group reporting improvement and those in the control group reporting deterioration. Gluten-free diet may thus be a useful therapeutic intervention for patients with gluten neuropathy. Muscle Nerve, 2006.

Wow I love it! Thanks for putting him all in one place. He is such a smart man! I sent the one about Lupus to my mom cuz her sister has lupus but she quit taking meds...said they didn't help. It would be nice if you keep adding his stuff so it is always together.

Thank you Anne. The more published articles on the link between gluten and neuropathy the better chance more doctors will begin to see the light. The last time I spoke to a radiologist and neurologist about this I just concluded our discussion by saying that maybe in a few years the connection would be more recognized.

I wonder if they remeasured antigliadin antibodies in each group. I was told by the York lab folks that in some cases with neurological involvement that these can remain high for a long time. My recent tests showed reactions to wheat and gluten even though I have been GF for 3 1/2 years. I know there is always the issue of CC but I am as careful as one can be in the real world. I may never have complete healing but I feel confident that I will not deteriorate while I remain GF.
