hi guys! i'm still reading here and just wanted to let you know what i saw today. nick had a cardiology appointment and i was looking through parents magazine. there was a very short piece about kids who have diarrhea and are losing weight. it said to have your doctor test them for celiac disease. so although they are certainly not the only symptoms, i was encouraged to see it there.

hopefully that helped some people and is helping spread the word in a small way.

Wow - that probably wouldn't have been published just a couple of years ago! How great is that?? :D

Have to add my own "discovery" - there's a free magazine you can find at health food stores called Better Nutrition, and the October 2006 issue has a cover story entitled, "Go Gluten-Free (without giving up whole grains!) and on Page 50 is "Gluten-Free - Grains of Goodness" by Cynthia Kupper, with a list of wheat alternatives, such as amaranth, teff, quinoa, etc. There's also a 6-question quiz, which includes items such as, "Is your child not growing well, overly cranky or having trouble with schoolwork?" and "Do you feel as if there is something wrong, but the doctor just can't figure out why you don't feel well?" The article ends with this: "If you do not have celiac disease, you may still have another form of gluten intolerance that is less likely to cause malabsorption of nutrients." :)

neat karen!

cara, nick's doing ok. long year so far. he's had 4 cardiac caths, 2 stents and found more problems with each cath. they also discovered parietal atrophy and occipital scarring on his last mri. but we have a really good cardiologist now and he's working on getting nick in the best possible care. he's limited on what he can do now, but he's doing ok.

thanks for asking!

It is nice to see info about CD magazines, newspapers and TV.

Luanne, good to hear that Nick has a good cardiologist. Sorry to hear that he has been through so much this past year. I hope he doesn't have to have more procedures. We always love hearing from you. Please keep us posted.

(((((hugs))))) to you and Nick (but I doubt Nick would hold still for a hug  ).

"If you do not have celiac disease, you may still have another form of gluten intolerance that is less likely to cause malabsorption of nutrients."

Not sure I like that conclusion. There may be no "proof" that gluten intolerance is as bad as CD but is there "proof" that it isn't? I don't think they should downplay the dangers of GS. Oh well, that is only one person's opinion.

Oh yeah, damage to the body by gluten is not only about malasorption and flat villi.

Oh, that sounds like it's been a very rough year. I'm so sorry he has to go through all this :(. I'm glad you have found a good cardiologist you are happy with...that has to help a little bit.
