Nordic Naturals (http://www.nordicnaturals.com/history.asp)
They do seem to take particularly good care of their products. It's a 12 minute promo video that explains why they think their cod liver oil is best.
There is an interview here that goes over much the same ground.
Nordic Naturals interview / Health Ranger Report (http:/****eo.google.com****eoplay?docid=-8058574655690289613&hl=en)
This research shows that regular cod liver oil does reduce levels of depression.
Associations between cod liver oil use and symptoms of depression: the Hordaland Health Study. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=17184843)
I use ordinary liquid (rather than capsules) omega 3 fish oil.
In the UK we can get liquid cod liver oil one of the usual UK mail order suppliers sells one containing.
Each 5ml (one teaspoonful) serving contains:
Pure Icelandic Cod Liver Oil of which total omega 3 is 920mg
EPA is 345mg
DHA is 460mg
Vitamin A is 967mcg (120% RDA)
Vitamin D is 10.35mcg (207% RDA)
Natural Source Vitamin E is 5.5mg (55% RDA)
Total Omega 3 920mg
The vitamin D content of this is slightly over 400iu per tsp. and the cost per day would be around 8p
Nordic naturals on the other hand provide.
DHA: 700 mg Vitamin A: 875-1950 IU
EPA: 450 mg Vitamin D: 5-40 IU
Other Omega-3: 250 mg Vitamin E: 8 IU
Total Omega 3: 1400mg per dose
Arctic Cod Liver Oil costs £17.39 for 47 days supply.
Cost per day £0.37
So you are getting a lot less Vitamin D3 but more omega 3 but the total price difference is significant. While I am convinced that Nordic Naturals is probably the better product and is more enviromentally ethically produced I'm disappointed with the low Vitamin D content and feel you would need to boost this as I do with an effective D3 supplement.
While I think you do not need to be alarmed at the high Vitamin A content that Cod liver oil provides I wouldn't take more than 2 teaspoons myself. But as I have pointed out I decided to use a high strength omega 3 fish oil and supplement this with an effective strength Cholecalciferol Vitamin D3 capsule. right the high level of vitamin A i heard might cause some effects. Ive read alot about omega 3 in the past couple days, and personally nordic naturals i think is the best one out there. and if u want more DHA u can get a highly concentrated DHA one(DHA helps more cognitively, mentally, and helps with memory) EPA helps more with the circulatory system. I think nordic naturals is the best one, cause i looked at drugstore.com for the best selling, and of course the cheap ones that werent much purified came up first. but then the nordic naturals came up, and they are pretty expensive in comparison, so i think they have a quality product, that's why they are sooo xpensive. also coromega is a pretty good one, it comes in puddy packs which u can mix in ice cream, yogurt, juice, milk or whatever.

afaik, fish oil has never been shown to be a cure for depression. it helps, but so do lots of other things like folate, exercise, etc. it also improves scores on other mental disorders like anorexia, but again, is not an effective treatment on its own.
personally, i think plain old twinlabs cod liver oil is a good product, if you keep it in the fridge after breaking the seal. it's also cheap, making taking an effective dose for things like arthritic pain easier. the vitamin A might be an issue there if you are an older woman and have to worry about osteoporosis, though.
supposedly, there is something magical about krill oil having a phospholipid form of omega-3s (versus triglyceride or ester), but i really don't know, haven't tried, and haven't investigated it.
other nutritional things i can think of at the moment are zinc and magnesium, which i take (not in oxide form, tho). and of course, i love the methylcobalamin, it is a lifesaver.

Higher plasma EPA was associated with a lower severity of DS in elderly subjects (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18469234)
Subjects consuming fatty fish or with an intake of long-chain n-3 PUFA higher than 0.10% of energy intake had a significantly lesser risk of any depressive episode and of recurrent depressive episodes, but not of single depressive episode. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18329261)
In the present 8 week trial EPA and fluoxetine had equal therapeutic effects in major depressive disorder. EPA + fluoxetine combination was superior to either of them alone. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18469234)
Just a few of the recent papers showing the benefit of the Omega e EPA on depressive symptoms.
I personally take over 1,5g 1500mg daily. That is the equivalent of 6 normal fish oil capsules or 3 superconcentrated capsules. You may find the liquid fish oil is a cheaper option at this intake level. (I also take ground linseed and a krill oil capsule to ensure I maintain a high omega 3 status)
