How many of you have doctors that have no problem rx some pain meds maybe not as mcuh as you would liike but at least they understand the pain and know that a rx of demerol may give you a few better days once in ahwile. and did your doctor rx more pain meds before and are balking now about doing it.

I mean why do I need to go to yet another cllinic to perscribe pain meds or worse stick something in my spine do do God only knows what.

See this is part of that health care problem, to many cheifs and not enough indians

Abby

How many of you have other diseases like I do (Fibro and CFS that have their own pain and some days the three including MS gang up and have a field day)

Abby- I don't know if you remember me from a few years ago..I'm back!

When my pain started spiraling out of control, my pcp gave me vicodin, then percocet, and was ditzy about going any farther. I was not able to get "on top" of my pain for very long.

I asked him to refer me to a pain doctor. best move I ever made. the pain doc started me off with methadone. I was taken aback. he explained to me that I was getting incomplete relief with the opiates, so it was logical to try methadone.

the first does was awesome!! it doesn't "kick in" but you gradually lose the pain. I had not felt true pain relief for about a year.

I've been on it since january. I do not crave more, although we have had to adjust my dose twic
e. I'm on 30mg/day

please watch out, though. some "pain docs" aren't truly well trained in pain.
I told mine that I knew a LOT about medications and that I would not stand for the acupuncture/biofeedback stuff unless I couldn't find anything else to help.

this is not to throw off on those practices-absolutely not. but they were'nt for me.

My quality of life is so much better than I ever hoped it could be. also, I don't know how many BT'ers know that my husband died last august (2006)

It's awful to say, but he was so sick, I was, too..I just couldn't keep up with all the work. now I really get to rest when my body needs it. I also started on disability 4/05.

anyhow, get thee to a pain specialist! my pcp was willing to do it, but I could tell that he was afraid of addiction.
the pain doc told me that he had never seen a person develop an addiction at my age (54) if I had not developed one so far. good to know.

but run it by your pcp. there are some good pain sites, too painonline is one.

Oh- and Abby- some meds just can't be taken at bigger doses. demerol is one. it's great for once-in-a while pain, but I need round-the-clock meds. demerol will build up metabolites in your system, so breaks are needed. morphine can make a person horribly constipated.

now, for cancer patients and suchlike the docs will prescribe morphine.

some people use fentanyl patches- pretty good, too.

do some research... methadone has been perfect for me- pain free almost every day with only dry mouth as a side effect.

methadone does NOT make you high or giddy. just a smoothing out of the pain.
so I can drive when I take it. ( I don't take it when I will go on a long trip just in case)

Abby,

I don't know the answer, except maybe a pain clinic? My current PCP does not like to RX pain medicine, my neuro even less so. I don't know what I'll do if it ever gets too bad.

I suppose the pain clinic is the way to go, since the doctors are afraid to RX pain meds for liability reasons I guess.
