There have been myriad sunrises and
long dark nights that have come and gone since
that cold afternoon in seventy eight.
A horrible fear has nestled inside
like a coiled snake preparing to strike
my whole life riding on what he decides.
Clinging to my back this bad occupant
cannot be dislodged or evicted,
I doubt I'll be able to kick it out.
Children are born and then, here's the grandkids
there have been countless happy moments
I have enjoyed but I feel 'it' lurking.
'Spoiler' should be the title he's sporting
everything is marred by his presense
happiness comes and he jogs my memory.
I think it's that 'out of my hands' feeling
that follows every happy moment,
muted words 'don't forget, I'm still here.
