Ok, HUUUUGE news, we got another dog!

OMG, I have eaten burgers heavier than this wee-man. He's in between a toy or tea cup poodle. I just couldn't take seeing our other pup Manny alone anymore. Dogs are so so social. We just got him a couple of hours ago, earlier at the Humane Society the two of them hit it off.

Supposedly, he is 2 1/2, the prev owners mysteriously forgot who his vet is, so cannot produce shot records - so the poor little guy has to go through the shots again. He's really cool, not hyper, not little dog 'weird'. I think he's too thin, but you know that won't last long. I really hope and pray he and Manny will be the best of buddies...have a fulfilling life together and with us. I can't wait till the 'newness' is over, and we are all settled in as one family.

What a time of uncertainty and stress this must be for the little guy, he spent 2 1/2 years with a family, now everything is strange and new. Ya know? He's more secure and confident than our dog Manny, so that helps that he's not grieving his other family and home (well he must be, but not to being overwrought with anxiety).

OH his name is Charlie, we like it so will just keep it. Manny and Charlie.

Unlike Manny who feels secure in a crate and travels with me everywhere in his purse (a MANly dog purse though, not a girly purse...hee hee) this dog clearly did not want to enter the crate I brought to transport him home, so he sat on Carmen's lap. His sheet that the owners fill out said he was housebroken and crate trained...if he was in a crate, it was not a positive experience. They said they gave him up cause they had no time for him, I wonder if he was crated for crazy periods of time. He does pee outside, unlike Manny who pees inside (on his papers - usually). But he crapped inside then hid, hmmmm, I picked it up and went on with my tasks, he came out quick, stared at me with his head cocked and one paw up like he was thinking "Get ready, I might need to run!" but of course, I ignore that kind of 'crappy' behavior (baawawawa, get it, he pooped - crappy behavior baawawaa) where as if you go outside or on the papers you get a treat and praise. Plus, he just got fixed yesterday, I have no idea how that must feel to squat, balance, push and poop - but when I saw him out of the corner of my eye pooping, I acted like I didn't notice, had he not finished, I would have felt constipated all night!

So, Manny and Charlie....Charlie and Manny. Manny seems a bit jealous, but of course I'll make sure cool things happen that didn't before Charlie came, so he thinks Charlie = good stuff. He already got 2 extra walks....he 'met' Charlie in the park across the street from our house, and we all walked in together, Manny was sooooo excited. Both are sound asleep now, just pooped.

I hope Charlie adjusts soon, I feel so bad for him, what a change to have to make and get used to...but I'm not 'pampering' him or empowering him to be a snippy wee man, we're not even approaching him, when he comes to us he gets lovins, otherwise we're letting him just do his exploration thing, but only in the living room and kitchen so far, not the whole house. Must feel like a mansion to him! I'm not even kidding, I think our biggest rat weighs more than this dog.

Can't wait till we all bond and enjoy each other so I know he feels he is part of our 'pack' - one of the few times I'd love time to fly!

Ok, that's it, the huge news...got a 2 1/2 year old sweet poodle kind of dog about the size of my size 10 shoe.

beautiful charlie, good companion for manny....yes, it's great news and I'd add lucky Charlie found a great family to care for him.
Mili, do research in google about vaccines for dogs. remember my jessie? She run a high fever after a 3-years rabies shot and slowly lost control of his hind legs.
it's a pity that the prev owners "forgot" the name of the vet I hope that means that Charlie was never vaccinated.

Ahhhhhh Mili....I was at the animal shelter myself yesterday. They have over 100 cats/kittens they are caring for and another 170 out in foster homes- in this county alone! I got it set up and paid for to have my 3 females spayed this coming Tuesday. Anyway....I am so glad you got your new "pup" there.

Then I opened your pics and.............oh the sweet memories....I had a kind of "dark white" colored poodle when I was a little girl, with brown marking around her eyes and so we named her "Cinnamon". I sure loved that girl and miss her her still. Thanks for sharing.

Shelly, the last dog I had to put down was a chocolate standard poodle, CoCo. It was before last Christmas, she was 16. I'm over her death, that was never the hard part for me, what was is I know how much I ignored her after the kids came, how much of a better more quality less BORING life I could have provided for her. She deserved so much better than I gave her. You know how it goes, the guilt factor...could have, should have. I could have walked her more, should have played ball and frisbee with her more, taken her places more...she was so so smart, she didn't have near enough to do. She loved me far far more than I deserved. Manny my little carpet pisser however, and now Charlie, are giving me a run for my money - I don't see any 'could have' or 'should have' feelings in my future for them. I can't wait until Charlie feels like a part of our pack, and he is healed so he and Manny can run and rip together. For now, I'm making Manny back off, he wants to go bonkers with Charlie, and I can see Charlie needs more peace - anyhow Manny is really doing well with obeying my authority (my looks, posturing) and not being all over the new dog every second. I'm top dog here...no one else! (Don't tell dh, he thinks he's top dog!!!) NO fighting or bad dog manners around me, Charlie already gets that and runs to my feet the moment Manny gets too boisterous. I think he's a real smart little guy - of course what else can a dog be but smart, they spend so much time observing instead of talking. Ya know?

Isabelle, I totally remember your heartbreaking thread about Jessie. Rabies vac is a must for Charlie, even if it wasn't the law. Having watched the long miserable death of a pup (when I was younger) with Parvo that vac is a must too (I think it's Parvo, Corona, Distemper...I forget what all is in it). Giardia can infect humans...can be in swimming pools...I'm assuming Charlie will want to swim like Manny does (Manny has a wee boat with a shade I made) Manny jumps off/gets on at will. So sadly, he's getting vaccinated. The only thing I skip is heart worm preventative, Limes, should we do serious camping one summer I'd get the heart worm but for now, his risk would be so low I don't feel it's justified. I know a dog, Burmese Mountain dog was the breed...he died from the preventative! Something about that breed having a low metabolic rate, this was 20 years ago so I can't recall exactly what the owners said, but I just remember one day they weren't walking him, and the preventative had killed him. I don't put the tic/flea stuff on dogs unless they actually get fleas - thought I'm not sure Manny could get fleas, his hair is thin and white and honestly a flea would have no hiding spot Manny is such a decoy, no ability to camafloge at all poor dog.

I'm going to ask Humane society to call them again though, and push the issue - dunno if they will. I really don't care so much that I have to vaccinate him, as I just want a vet record for accurate info that could help him. Our vet is super, she'll work with me to do what is best for Charlie, she's very emotionally involved in her work, I really like her.

Charlie had a super first night - I was concerned about his stitches, but unlike Manny Charlie does not feel secure being put in a crate, he feels caged. So, I put a dog bed into one of those collapsible rectangle hampers so one end would be open, faced the open end away from Manny's bed (Manny sleeps on a rocking chair with his dog bed on the seat next to me and I assume in time Charlie will sleep with him). I put Charlie on the nightstand next to my bed. I was worried Manny would get rowdy with my at night so wanted them separate till Charlie is over his neuter. Anyhow, Charlie slept through the night, fell asleep in about 30 seconds of me rubbing his belly, it was hysterical. I'm happily surprised he's not whining or visibly pining for his previous humans - thought I'm sure he must be still feeling displaced.

Oops, Charlie wants to go for a walk - gotta get the 'boys' leashed and go.

Hi Milli,
I'm trying to post some pictures of my daughter's little yorkie-poo. I've never done this on this board so am hoping it works out so you can see her. She's 6 years old and is only about 3 and a half pounds. Her coloring looks a little like Charlie. I would be hesitant about not preventing those fleas. My daughter didn't one year and they had an infestation of them in the house all over the place. It was a son of a gun to get rid of too. Now she doesn't take any chances and has her animals sprayed or whatever she does ahead of time. It's a little costly but it's worse and more costly if those fleas get into the house.

MrsJ, OMG Muffin is soooooooo cute, and teeny weeny like Charlie!!! It is so different having one so small and petite, like Manny is a really stocky solid dog, I swear I'm starting to think he's 1/2 Poodle 1/2 Jack Russell. But Charlie is darn teeny...according to our human scale he is 5 pounds, I weighed myself with, then without him. I find that hard to believe he's that much though - a gallon of milk is like 8 pounds, he's no where near that. I'll have to get his weight from the vet. Last Manny went to the vet, he was 11 pounds.

Charlie would be my sixth dog (as an adult) I'm totally comfortable dealing with fleas after the fact, been there done that.

JB, though Vince is definitely great with animals now, I would never trust him alone with either dog. He's doing things now with them that is very nurturing like I've never seen before, but I could totally imagine him thinking chasing them or scaring them was 'funny', and not realizing he was terrifying them, they could get seriously hurt...anyhow, it's sure is tension when you have to keep them apart, used to be even if I was home I had to make sure he and the dogs weren't in the same room without me. I remember Vincent's first pet, a hamster...I actually had it's home locked...it was a 20 gallon tank on Vincent's closet shelf, I put a door using hinges and a padlock, so he couldn't get the tank out to get the hamster out, and, there was no cage wire to poke it, I mean I even had to put a frame and lock around his fish tank fearing he would hurt the fish. I no longer have to worry about the fish or rodents, but do worry about the dogs and would not yet trust him fully - when I'm there, yes. But kids, autistic or not, can think of the darndest things, I don't want our pets to pay the price.

as a consolation i let you know that my autistic son also never care for animals and in our good times we had plenty, not as many as mili's, though. we still have two 16 year-old cats, one fat and one grouchy skinny cat (all mine) and a 7 year old morbidly obese cat....:(
