I received the following question from a relative of mine and was wondering if any of you might have some input regarding a person with a TBI using PECS to communicate. Thanks.

One of my best-friends had a Traumatic Brain Injury. She only remembers childhood family and a friend or two. Also, she cannot talk or communicate. I am wondering would PECS be an option here. I don't know every single ounce of her sitaution, but I had mentioned it, and mentioned that my daughter uses it and that it works very well for her.

I was just wondering if you happened to know anyone with a TBI that would have 20 something year old child with a TBI that is basically in a toddler state, that uses PECS.

I read your post earlyer this morning and had never heard of this PECS thing. So being a veteran, I went to our speech therapist and asked about it. From what I was told, and personnal exsperiance, pitureers are a lot better way of communicating ones needs to thoses around us, cause finding words can be difficult, at lease it was for me, in the begaining.
Every little bit helps us in at lease rebuilding our personnallyty and confidance.

Joy,
I don't know if you mean the actual PECs method, or just using pictures for communication? I have actually heard of pictures being used for people with TBI's and being very effective. If they find it works, they might be able to move on to a communication device that uses pictures as well and can take the communication to a higher level. (I am thinking of something like the Super Auggie you can find on RJ Cooper's website http://www.rjcooper.com/) I especially like his devices because he tries hard to keep the costs down so that familys can afford them.
