Today, still infused with the vacation spirit, I decided to go into my way hot way humid back yard, sit in the plastic adirondak chair I bought 5 years ago and never used, and flip through some fun books...3 books about decorating children's rooms, one about turtles and tortoises, a book about masonary, and one about building your own screened room. I put my 4 nonalcohalic beers in an empty 5 pound bird seed container with ice, thought of the Corona commercials and felt they had nothin on me!

I read while the kids swam, mostly they didn't fight which was great. I was in the shade of a tree cause I'm not one of those sun lovers. Eventually I went into the pool and enjoyed basking in the wee 3 feet of water that is our way cool pool.

Best of all my friend who let us stay at her/her family's condo in Florida came over with her daughter who is on the spectrum, 13, and has become drop dead gorgeous which of course gives my friend extra worry I'm thinking. Well anyhow, I just love this kid. She did something so funny today I'm still laughing. Bear in mind it might be one of those 'ya had to be there' funny things.

We were in the pool, she likes to recall the info she knows about hair getting wet...that it will dry. She likes to ask me to get my hair wet, and ask me to touch my hair (I think that's her way of liking me). Well, the most wonderful thing happened, instead of saying "I like your hair" which to me sounds like her telling me she likes me, she actually said, "I love you". It's like, I can't even describe how special and happy and blessed that made me feel. You know how some folks might feel it would be an 'honor' to go to the White House or something, that's how I feel about people liking me, but especially a child, and especially a child I love - like I feel I've loved her as a niece from afar for so many years. My caring about her and feeling close to her was pretty much immediate upon meeting her - though I tend to feel like that about all kids on the spectrum with her it was in a way even beyond that.

Ok so the funny part...I'm sitting in the pool enjoying the water and her company and my friend being there. She asks me a new question instead of our usual safe dialogs, so I'm real into it. She asks "what is in your hair?" So, thinking she meant it was wet, I said water, then touched the side of my head she had just touched and asked her, "did you put something in my hair?" and she said, "Yes" and I asked what it was....and she ever so sweetly said, "A bug." Baawawaawaawwa...I couldn't stop laughing, like that was the last answer I expected. I can't recall her taking an interest in bugs, let alone picking one up. From her, I'd expect a flower or something sweet in my hair...I love it. It was just so all together unexpected. I turned that side of my head to her mom cause of course I wondered what species it was, but it must have flown away what ever it was. I asked her, "Did you put a bug in my hair!" with like a high surprised pitched, and she sweetly said, "Uh huhhhhh". I dunno if the bug was just convenient cause it was in the pool, or if she knows I like bugs...what I really really loved is how cool it was that she was breaking our usual safe banter (which I also like honestly, cause it's so nonstressful and safe for me too) and to me, that break from safety plus her telling me she loved me, wow, she is maturing bless her heart...anyhow it was just really exciting to me. She 'punked' me (like that show) so I really enjoyed that lots.

Thanks for sharing the story, Mili. It's very special.

My son wouldn't swim for some years. He couldn't stand the feeling of the water. Actually the more I think about it, the more I think it was about actually getting out of the water and having to get dry and feeling not quite dry all the time.

I hope you're enjoying that warm weather. When I first started reading your message and you said "I put my 4 nonalcohalic beers ..... " well, for a split second I thought you were going to say you tied strings around their necks and put them in the pool or somewhere. LOL
