Rags was OK last night when neighbor's had fireworks.....but tonight will be a different story! We have Navy fighter jets that go right overhead @ times, he's not too fond of those either.
One year when we still had the Bouvier,Mary, we forgot about her fear of fireworks & went to a party. When we got home we couldn't find Mary. Finally after looking everywhere & calling her,we found her huddled down in a large ditch right by the road! I felt horrible! Have never been gone on the 4th since then....
Everyone be sure your dog has a tag/collar on tonight-they will bolt even if have never done so before! All it takes is one of those very loud booms to set them off-literally!
Have a happy & safe 4th!

Buttons,
I was heartbroken when I left my ex and had to leave the dogs. They were my faithful companions. Even theis huge Great Dane trembled on the 4th. Being so big she had a hard time finding a place to hide so she would jump on your lap! She always thought that she was a lap dog (lol)
My other dog was also scared she would go in the kennel, her safe haven. I sure do miss those dogs! I loved them so!*heart
But they are with a family that is taking good care of them!Unfortunatly they were too much for me, they would frequently trip me, not meaning to of course.
The dog I have now has adjusted so well living here. She follows me around when I water my plants. And is always there when I hang clothes on the line, she is so sweet. I hate it that it is so hot but she is used to being an outside dog!
She is fortunate that we live in the country, so she does not have to contend with the fireworks!*hug
Have a great 4th, my dear friend! Love, Javi

Hi Javisi, thanks for the reply. I love Great Danes, well any big dog really! I'm so glad you have a companion dog now & can't imagine how hard it was to leave your other doggies.....glad they have a good home though!
Read my new post today-more trouble!
Rags & I both slept right through all the fireworks last night. He's such a good dog in so many ways....he wakes up when the sun comes up & the critters are moving around. I just open my trailer door & let him out while I go back to sleep. He's always right there by the door when I get up to come inside the house. (My "room" is a 32' vintage trailer).
One year I lived with a big brown Newfoundland mix named Brutus,on Memorial Day he met up with a porcipine(sp),had to rush him to a vet that agreed to come in (for extra $$ of course). He was so big the vet couldn't even get him on the table to put him under by himself of course! My dad lost 2 dogs one year from quills in their mouths, dad had gone yard saleing (is that a word), and my mom let them suffer for hours! I was furious, dad shot both dogs, they were nearly dead from dehydration by the time he got home that day. He was depressed for many months over those dogs. Keep in mind my parents never took dogs to vets for anything, dogs always kept outside & fed table scraps. Kinda surprised Dad didn't shoot Mom instead.....this was many years ago,she drove then, could easily have picked up these little doggies & taken them to a vet! Ya don't need to guess what kind of healthcare I got as a child do ya??
Take care,Buttons

Hi all...I'm told that Benedryl is great to give to dogs to help calm them down when fireworks exploding.
I'm so glad our doggie, Satin, black Lab has zero fears of noises like that.
She's duck trained...also very highly trained when I got her...so gun noises and fire crackers have zero effect on her.
But now she's 99.99% deaf....Can't even hear keys tinkling above her head, but not sure...when I get my keys, she heads for the door wanting to go with me everywhere as she has for years while being my service dog.
So perhaps if your doggies is having trouble with fireworks...call an ER vet hospital to confirm the use of Benedryl for calming them down.
Blessings, cheryl
