My 18 month old grandson has been diagnosed with tethered cord at Kaiser Hospital, Oakland CA. As of the present, he appears to be symptom-free, and after an MRI the doctor recommended no surgery, just monitor the situation. Evidently they found a little tension on the nerve but nothing major.

Has anybody on this list had experience with tethered cord with a child of this age? What do people think of this recommendation, and is it likely that he will develop symptoms later in life? Also, does anybody know of a specialist in tethered cord in little children in this area (San Francisco Bay area)?

Thanks for any suggestions or experiences.

Just got home yesterday from Oakland Kaiser having tethered cord surgery for my 9yo daughter. Wanted to let you know she is up and walking on her own just 3 days later and doing great. The docs and staff there were great. Our neuro surgeon was Dr. Pang. Good luck to you!
