We are doing PECs and ABA with our daughter. However, I am having a difficult time organizing icons. Plus, if I'm in one room the icons are always in another room and by the time I retrive them, well the moment is lost.

How do you keep it all organized and handy? I've seen the plastic books, velcro, etc. Carly stims on velcro, so I use magnets. I have a magnetic board and that part works well for us.

Plus, Carly does not walk and has CP to boot. Plus, we have to control the schedule board, etc.

I'd like some ideas.:D :D

Hi Deborah
I know what you mean. I have done both. PECS can be a little impractical. You will need at least two sets of the pECS icon so that you always have a portable set. Put them in a mini concertina file in various labelled categories. I'm sure you can get magnetic pages that you could use in a booklet. The stuff that advertisers use to put on fridges. Good luck with the ABA. It was hard work, but so worthwhile. Your daughter's description sounds so like me Joanna. Also suspected having a genetic disorder, had a transient metabolic disorder, has developmental delays, is rather small compared to her twin brother, but is mobile, altho' wobbily!

In addition to my son's pecs book we have boards for the car for the kitchen and for the bathroom. We also made somd larger cards and hole punched them and strung them on a D-clip that we can clip to belt loop or purse and carry where ever we go.

PECS can be cumbersome - you're trying to keep a whole vocabulary instantly at hand! We wound up having several mini-books, and kept them where they were used - eg. - a picture of a toilet in the main book and then a mini-book on the bathroom door knob with the bathroom type pictures in it, or a picture of the fridge in the main book and the food choices actually on the fridge in the kitchen. Simplify as much as possible - or do what we did - get a Dynavox! www.dynavoxtech.com

We got an aug. comm. device as well- a Vantage. Its like a pecs system in a small laptop.

Very expensive, but the state paid for ours.
