Story Highlights

• Michigan man's wheelchair becomes lodged in the grille of a semitrailer
• The 21-year-old is unharmed but is taken to the hospital as a precaution
• Truck driver unaware of what had happened until officers stopped him

PAW PAW, Michigan (AP) -- A man was taken on a wild ride when his wheelchair became lodged in the grille of a semitrailer and was accidentally pushed down a highway for four miles at about 50 mph, authorities said.

The 21-year-old man, whose name was not released, was unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He had been secured to his wheelchair by a seat belt.

"The man spilled his soda pop, but he wasn't upset," said Sgt. Kathy Morton of the Michigan State Police.

About 4 p.m. Wednesday, a caller told police dispatchers, "You are not going to believe this: There is a semi truck pushing a guy in a wheelchair on Red Arrow Highway," state police said in a release.

Authorities initially wondered whether the report was a prank call until others called with similar reports.

Officers stopped the truck -- wheelchair still attached -- at a trucking company. The driver didn't believe officers until he stepped from his cab and saw for himself.

"When he saw us, he was like, 'What's going on?' " Morton said.

An investigation revealed the man in the wheelchair had pulled in front of the truck at a gas station, and it somehow became lodged by its handles to the front grille.

Good heavens!! That poor guy! It's a wonder his wheelchair held together. And the poor truck driver. I bet he nearly came unglued when he found out how close to tragedy he came.

That will be one wild story for the guy in the wheelchair to tell years from now, won't it? Hey, Grampa, tell us about the time your chair got stuck in the grill of a semi!!

I'm so glad he wasn't hurt.

Yeah that definitely ranks as one of the wildest stories I ever heard. I too thought about the man telling his story to friends and family - and most of them saying 'yeah, right'.

I wonder if somehow the wheels were lifted from the ground a bit during all of that, I can't imagine how it held together just like you. I dunno if that was bad luck to get stuck, or good luck not to get hurt or killed.

I didn't even stop and think about how the truck driver must have felt till today. On CNN they said he didn't believe the cops until he left his truck to go see for himself. Man, I think that would 'haunt' me for years, I'd have to keep getting out of my truck to check my grille, or install mirrors so I could see it at all times. I always had serious fears of running over a child and dragging them, since the first time I heard a news story about someone doing that and not knowing....wooooo, gives me a scare so bad just talking about it. I've pulled over hundreds of times in my life (since having my own kids) just to check and make sure nothing (no one) was stuck to my car after hearing a noise, or seeing a kid on a bike then no kid in my rear view mirror. Actually a couple years ago the kids and I watched as a young lady was run over several times by a car intentionally, in the parking lot of our grocery store. So yes, the notion that my car is a weapon is predominant for me, cause really it is.

Bet I'll have a strange and scary dream tonight...I better stop talking about this!

Thank God the guy was ok. Cops even said he didn't seem shaken. I bet he was too shocked.

poor guy... I saw him and the truck. Could you even imagine how scared he was?
