from the article:
DR. FELDSTEIN: I don't think that every parent with a child with autism should be rushing out to get an MRI scan to look for possibility of a Chiari Malformation. Many of them do, however, get MRI's as part of their routine evaluation. Its certainly the radiologist who review these films should be aware that it may not just be an incidental finding in that case and should make sure its flags so that the clinicians can evaluate and see whether or not there really is some relevance for that individual. In addition, if there's anything unusual about the autism that strikes the pediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologists, therapists as somehow different than the norm, they should be evaluated. So it may very well be that there's something in addition to autism that can be addressed.
I disagree with him here. I think an MRI should always be done when autism is suspected, since they don't know cause. Its important to check out brain structures anytime there is a neurological problem I would think. But nice to see somebody beginning to notice a connection. When my daughter got her first MRI I told the NS that one of the things I wanted to check for was Chiari. After he made fun of me for mispronouncing the word, (I'd only ever seen it written) he told me that chiari malformations could not cause autism-period.

I agree with you completely and honestly don't see how anyone can arrogantly claim they're not related. That's why I started my forum. I hope we can band together and convince the nsg world that they need to take a long, hard look. It'd be great to have Dr. F on our side, too! :)

it amazed me how professionals are not capable to think out of the box, to expand on possibilities, they love to stay in their comfort zone, feel safe and authoritarian and theirs is the final word, pity a parent who dare to question them...:(

I find there are some who are wonderful: caring, concerned, and great listeners. Then there are those who believe the only thing that exists in medicine is what has been studied...I like it best when medical care is a combination of art and science.

I don't know how many times I've said, "Uh, I don't know how to pronounce it; I've only seen it written." But, it's been a lot. And I'm sure I don't pronounce Chiari correctly, either.:o

Back in jan of 1999 or 2000 JAMA reccomended that children dx with autism have a baseline MRI.... doctors seem to ignore that recomendation.
