I have found the only thing that works in controlling my seizures is marijuana. I have been on more than half a dozen prescription AEDs with no benefit or little benefit and terrible side effects. Marijuana, I have found, controlls my seizures 100% of the time (I always have an aura before a seizure) and can be used at the time I get the aura rather than having to stay constantly on a drug. I also find that the side effects from marijuana are mostly benign or even pleasant.....I may gain weight from the munchies.

My only problem is finding a doctor to write the prescription. Every doctor I've been to looks at marijuana as not a viable medical option and wants to stick to tried and true AEDs. I honestly can't stand even the thought of taking another conventional AED. The side effects have been horrible and even scary to me. My current neurologist just kinda looked at me funny when I actually had the nerve to tell him I found out marijuana works to control my seizures. He didn't acknowledge it with a comment, just looked at me and went on to talking about various drugs he might try or sending me in for brain surgery. I am on public insurance (medi-cal which is medicaid in California) and live in San Luis Obispo county. If anyone has any advice please let me know.

Peace,

Daniel

Daniel,

There are plenty of doctors in California who are experienced in recommending cannabis for qualified patients. Dr. Frank Lucido in Berkeley may be able to help you, if you can document your condition and the benefit you obtain or hope to obtain from cannabis. He is very careful to make recommendations only when appropriate and after a proper medical examination, but it sounds to me like you have a valid medical need.

Dr. Lucido's homepage (http://www.drlucido.com/).

Hope this helps.

You have Medi-cal???

Not too bad then. They will pay for any doctor you want to go to. You can probably find a doctor near you, that takes Medi-cal, and is a specialist in doing the paperwork you need, just by searching the internet.

Who knows, maybe Medi-Cal will one day pay for the drug too.

Perhaps so (http://www.drugpolicy.org/news/092906mmj.cfm).

DPA's Office of Legal Affairs achieved a victory for California patients this week after a protracted legal battle. As a result of a court decision on September 25, indigent medical marijuana patients in California who receive public assistance benefits through the Department of Health Services may qualify for reimbursement of the cost of their medicine.

medi-cal will pay for any doctor I want to go to, but most doctors won't accept medi-cal because they're really bad about paying. Where would I look to see a list of doctors who will prescribe?

Berkley is quite a drive from here. I don't know how I would get there. I'm down in San Luis Obispo county.

As far as documentation, what would I need? My epilepsy hasn't shown up on any EEGs to date (I've had several) and the MRIs have showed nothing as well. The only documentation I might be able to provide is that I've been to several neurologists and been prescribed a host of AEDs that I've suffered through.

Great news on that DPA thing. I'm surprised this is the first I've heard of it. I'd love it if medi-cal would cover my medicine even though the federal government so horribly classifies it as Schedule 1 still. Even if I have to do it out of pocket and be reimbursed that'd still be awesome. Of course the first thing will be getting that prescription so that I can get the ID card. My county only recently started allowing medical marijuana dispensaries and issuing the ID cards. It's my understanding (from newspaper stories) that the cards are going to cost between $75 and $125 here. I'm not sure what determines which price in that range you pay, but either way I'll come up with the money. It's too important to me. I need to have these seizures under control and I can't buy from street dealers.

Peace,

Daniel

Don't give away all the credit Mike....

It was posters like you that prompted the creation of this forum. I certanly do hope it does serve to help inform & perhaps even open some eyes...

Hey, just so long as we don't get people posting pictures of their plants here, bragging about the beautiful flowers they grow, it's all theraputic to me. And if it's beneficial to you medically, then it's beneficial to BrainTalk & it's members.

Dave's not here....
