Hi... I am a 58 year old woman who has been diagnosed with CIDP... I seem to have more and more trouble walking... I have been using a cane, but it really hurts my back... The only place that I can really do well walking is in a grocery store where I can get behind a shopping cart... It just helps so much to have both hands at the same level in front of me... I feel like I could walk forever in the store and I would love to have one to use for exercise... I live out in the country with dirt roads and no pavement except a two lane highway that is dangerous to even drive on... I have been looking at a rollator that has 10 inch wheels and I really think that is what I need... Does anyone have any experience with these on rough ground..???
Does anyone know where "used" rollators may be purchased..??? Or maybe even a place where one could be rented... I priced one with my insurance (my neuro wrote a prescrition for me to get one) but I would have to pay over $300 out of my own pocket, and things are just too unsettled for me to want to shell out that much right now until I see where I am at financially with retirement...
Thanks...
Aimee

Aimee:
The cane may be hurting your back because it is either too short or too long. Maybe you need a therapist to help you get it to the right length. My therapist gave me an adjustable cane to experiment with until I got the right height. She said you also have to adjust the length of a cane based on heel height. Since I don't wear high heels now (see my avatar) that is not a problem. I have a rollator with eight inch wheels, a basket and a seat which is great when I am having a bad day. I also use forearm crutches on bad days. The crutches are less cumbersome than loading or unloading the rollator in a car, but with the crutches both hands are not available for carrying things.
Good luck...Wobbly One

E-bay.com may have good deals on a rollator for far far less than $300. Chances are good that you'll find some right now, though I'm not promising that there will be one each time you look. Ebay makes it as easy as they possibly can for you and me to bid and pay. If you live in a larger town perhaps there's a medical supply store that you might rent from.

You can also try Goodwill or Salvation Army for good used equpment. Some churches and veterans' clubs have loan closets.

I ordered my rollator that does gravel flea markets and has a seat on it. Bought it for a Disney trip and was great. From Amazon about $130.00...
There may be some others on the site called mobility aids that have larger wheels, I found the wider ones good though. I was also able to put a youngster on it for a lift, and rest in lines.
I like to walk, but a cane makes me lean, and when traveling I can carry on the basket.
I am 52 and did not want a geriatric looking type.
I found the same thing on SAM's Club for $$66.62
