This is actually regarding Averi and not Chloe. Anyway, Averi is in the process of potty training and is doing well but refuses to poop on the potty. She won't even go near it even with all the bribes and persuading that we've tried. I've been told it is something that will come with time. Anyway, she waits until she gets a diaper on at bedtime(she is not potty trained at night yet)and then she poops in it. She usually goes every night but this last week she hadn't gone Sat-Mon and then went Tuesday with no probs. Then she didn't go Wed. and yesterday evening kept complaining of her butt hurting. I checked it out and seen she was a little red in that area like irritated so I put a diaper on so I could put some desitin on to clear it up. A little while later she said she pooped and when I went to change it she had a mod. amt. of blood in the stool and around her anal opening. Before I had put the diaper on and when she was complaining about it she kept putting her hands down there and I wondered if maybe she scratched it some and then when she actually pooped it caused the scratches to bleed. She was fine after that and had no other issues but I was concerned about the blood. I am almost positive it came from the outside but just wanted to see if anyone has had this problem before. I kept the diaper in a plastic bag and am going to call her doctor this a.m. to see what she says but thought I'd see if anyone has had experience with this. Thanks so much!!

I'm not doctor, but it is soooooo common during potty training for kiddos to hold their poos for so long, that it will become so large that it will tear the rectum a little ontheway out......Poo part is so hard, my oldest who is now almost 18, would go behind a chair and poo, finally about 3 or so it clicked with him in his time and walla it all fell into place. You could ask your ped about any advise he/she has also. Good luck, oh the fun of potty training....

if the blood is bright red it is probably from it being large/hard and tearing some of the skin. The concern would be if she had bloody diarrhea or 'old blood' (dark colored), or 'coffee ground' feces. Old blood/coffee ground would indicate bleeding inside the colon/intestinal tract.

i imagine this is just the joys of toilet training....but I'm not a doctor. What'd your ped say?

Her siezure mediocation might be constipating her to some extent, so that the harder stool might be tearing her when she does go. I take seizure medication and have for 23 years. Most of them have some constipation as a side effect. Talk to the doctor. If it is making it painful for her you'll never get her potty trained. Good luck,
Jim

Kori,

I wouldn't worry about it...probably from her holding it in so long to the point that it did tear a little when she finally went....that happened to my DH, Emma.

Good Luck on potty training, it was so hard with Emma and the poos.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to Averi on learning to use the Big Girl's Potty! What an achievement! I'm with Tracy here, and when my pediatrician explained it to me, it made so much sense.

From what I understand (It may sound a bit Freudian), little ones have a hard time letting go of the poop especially because or the flushing. Unlike pee, which they can't really see in the water, the poop is very visible to them, and flushing it away is almost like flushing away a part of them. It can be very scary for some--I know that it was for my two (NT) kiddos.

When they poop in their diaper, they can feel it against their skin and know that it's still there. The key with my kids was making sure that we made a big deal out of all going to the toilet, dumping the poop from the diaper in, flushing, waving bye-bye, clapping, etc...It was all very reassuring and within a week or making this big deal, both were going like champs! Of course, kid # 2 has #1 to watch, which, if Averi goes to a sitter or is in a playgroup (mine were in home daycare), she can do.

I think that DayCare centers probably have rules about the whole gang going in to clap and wave bye-bye, but the home daycare isn't bound by that, and, as funny as it sounds, works!

Does any of this make sense? Maybe I'm crazy, but again, it seemed to work, at least in my house. I'm about to have a go at it again with Kiddo # 3--after 13 years, maybe it's a God thing that I stopped by and saw your posting. I needed to remind myself of what I'm in for once again!

How is Chloe doing? What new things has she accomplished lately?

Hugs,
Annie B.

Gross, but look through the poo to see if blood is in the stool or just on the outside...just on the outside, I agree she tore her little bum hole when she pooped. I am a grown woman, and I still have this problem...have had all my life.

I talked to the nurse and she said that it was most likely tearing from a hard poop. From what I could tell it was just on the outside of the bm and not within it. She hasn't pooped again since then but I'm sure she will tonight so I'll just be keeping an eye on it. I think having one child with so many issues the thought of the other one having problems of any kind scares the crap out of me. :) She drinks a ton of water and hardly any milk anymore(she's way too much like me already:)), and eats a moderate amount of fruit so I'm not sure why she is going a couple of days in betweens bm's but I figure she'll get back on track soon. Thanks for all the help!!

Anal fissures hurt and can retear when a bm is passed, so she maybe holding it back. I would keep pushing the fruit and water to keep it soft.

Only mothers can have this kind of conversation:p
