It will be a high priority update for those of you who do not know and will be installed automatically for those of you who have that feature turned on.

To prevent this and stay on IE6 go here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4516A6F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-869B4A90159C&displaylang=en).

Unreal!!! -- They are basically trying to force ppl to IE7!!!

Yep just like they forced millions to goto sp2.

I don't even use IE.
(except that its automatically part of AOL's system)
I usually browse thru Firefox. Should I know something?
What's this all about?

this must be what keeps downloading yesterday and today. about explorer still says 6, but adds a sp2. hum.

does this mean i have to reconfig the thing? zombie slayer just got thru configuring my new computer for me, this is kind of too much i think.

Annie click the link in "The Dude's" first post (the word here) and download the toolkit to stop IE7 from downloading.

That way you don't have to re-configure anything :)

Is there any reason NOT to upgrade to IE7? I use IE for accessing the Net; nothing "seems" amiss. I have auto update, so it's probably done. Is there some massive problem with it?

Please advise ASAP!

Thanks!!

Massive problem? No. Buggy and security holes....no doubt. It's just a matter of time before they're found, exploited, reported, and then a new patch/version will be out.

IE 6 is far more stable and more secure.

I clicked the link and read the information. Do I click where it says:

Continue-Validation required

I haven't touched it yet, because I want to make sure I'm doing the
right thing, first.

Thanks!:)

I must have automatic updates turned off from day1 then. I get the nuisance-shield and pop-up telling me which updates are available, tic the ones I want, and it will download them. Nothing is automatic except the install itself AFTER they're downloaded if I wish it to be so. Nothing is downloaded until I request it.

Has this changed? I pick and choose my updates. If I don't want it, I don't download it to my computer OR install it.
Since 1987, my computers do what I tell them to, NOT the other way around.

Okay. I checked on download history, and IE7 has NOT been downloaded yet! Whew. So I will do what Matt suggested and turn off the auto update function.

After a **** site hijacked my homepage start-up the other day, I'm definitely NOT wanting anything that is "buggy" with "security holes"! I think I have enough of those...in spite of having SpywareBlaster, Spy Bot S&D, Ad-Aware, Defender2, & McAfee AV!

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated, everyone!

I have been using I.E.& - till yesterday.. It was a bit buggy, until Thursday when I downloaded the upgrade.. And man talk about taking 20 steps backwards.. Browser windows were slow, freezing --- a real mess...

I downloaded Firefox 2.o and decided to try that.. I am thoroughly impressed with its speed and functionality! TOtally...

I amy go back to I.E. but I really am tired of all the pgms one needs to run to ensure its security...

You were surfing **** sites?!? :D

Actually, that's part of the big push to get people to move to Internet Explorer 7 - for security. However, as Mike, er, ZS, says, it's only a matter of time before an exploit is found ... but that's nothing new and no reason not to update, imho.

I would stress, however, that it's best to have a fully patched system prior to install so you will need to run Windows Update if you do intend using IE7, and go with the recommended and critical updates, especially the critical ones.

Stability ... mmm, I've been using IE7 through most of it's various beta stages and while it was buggy during the development stages, I haven't had any problems with it since the update prior to this final release.

One thing that everyone should bear in mind is that support for Internet Explorer 6 will be withdrawn sooner or later which means any exploits that are developed won't get patched by Microsoft.

ok guys now i am seriously confused.

agree with mcfox that it is important to move on. the kaypro with CP/M never had a virus but that was long ago. were there viruses written for CP/M?

in any event, i thought i had automatic updates turned on and was just waiting around for it to happen to me. however nothing seems to have downloaded, at least it hasn't told me it has. all my non-flicker configs are still in place, NO flash has downloaded.

About IE says that i have version 6.0***x and sp2.

should i just let it do what it wants or should i be doing something?

my general practice is to let my computer do whatever it wants. it is smarter than i am.

LOLLOL!! :D

Would have to say it "infiltrated" from something hubby clicked! But actually, I think it was something that hijacked the ISP for a bit; the tech there seemed to know all about it! Hmm. ;)

I upgraded to IE 7.0, and the install went fine. This program seems to run better than IE 6.0. I did a restore point before I d/l and installed IE 7.0.

I upgraded early this week, (I upgrade everything from MS) even tho we
use Mozilla.
After rebooting I started getting an error message:
"motiveSB.exe"--entry point not found.
and "the get process imagefile nameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAP1.DLL"

So after a couple of days, I started freezing up a bit..now and then. And
2 days ago our AT&T DSL went down.

So here is the fix if anyone else is having this problem:

This error message may be due to a program or programs (currently identified
"culprits" include Motive SmartBridge, Hal Screen Reader and Supernova
Reader Magnifier by Dolphin) that ship with an older version of PSAPI.DLL
Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located
in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

To work around this error:

Navigate to the installation location for SmartBridge (\Program
Files\Verizon...\Smart...)
Find PSAPI.DLL and rename it to something like PSAPIOLD.DLL
Reboot the system
The program will find the new PSAPI.DLL in the \Windows\System32 directory
and function normally.
</QP>

This link above, does not have the fix, only other information on IE 7.0.
In essence our router software installed a .DLL file, which was duplicated by
the update to the Windows directory, so the computer was fighting between the two.

After renaming the old file, everything is working smoothly again. But it was
very frustrating for a few days. (my son helped us out with it).
Also HIS opinion is that if you run MS, you should get the IE 7.0 upgrade, as stuff in it may be important to running XP. (security stuff linked within). Even tho we do not run IE 7.0...we use Mozilla... he says getting the upgrade is
a good idea.

Well, wifey now has IE7 on her laptop. She has automatic updates turned on, and I don't watch her laptop as closely as my desktop.

The interface sure looks different. Gonna have to get used to a whole new look and completely different functionality. If it ain't broke, break it then fix it.

The first thing we noticed was the lack of a mail retrieval link at the top. I had to put a direct link to Outlook Express on her desktop for her to check the mail. Very clumsy having to close the browser and check the mail. Probably just haven't found it yet. All of the previous versions of IE were similar to each other in design. This one is quite a step off the beaten path. More like a jump off a bridge.

Not one of the restore points could restore the computer to an earlier time, so no going back just yet.

MS IE 7...

Do you see a Tools icon? Use the pull-down menu and select Toolbars and, then, Customize. You can choose the option to add a Read Mail toolbar button.

I am using IE7 and have liked it so far. I like the tabs. I have not had a problem....yet.

I was using Foxfire but I did not like the interface. I was using Avant and like that the best but after an upgrade it was acting very strangely. I may try downloading that again. I have Avant on my laptop and the upgrade works well there. Avant doen't allow a google tool bar from what I can tell and I don't like that.

I just upgraded Windows media player...what a spiffy new thing it is!

It shows the album covers now, and the song being played..it is really nice.
Easier to use too!

I don't use it often, just to update my MP3 player...so I don't know how long
it has been out there. It just prompted me to load it when I turned it on.

My son has seen the new "Vista"..is that the name? He says it is really nice,
but doesn't know it in detail yet. They just installed it at his job.

I installed IE 7.0 a while back. I liked it until it hijacked the Home page I liked. I can not change the setting back.

I gave IE7 a try on my desktop.

The next morning everything slowed down so much I thought it was just going to freeze up. I takes almost 3 minutes just to load up my start up screen and load the icons on it when I turn it on. 3 minutes! This is a 3ghz dual-core processor, it used to take about 14 seconds. This machine is now running like a track star running the hundred yard dash in knee deep mud. :(

The exact same thing has happened on my dual core laptop since the "upgrade"

I have now uninstalled the IE7 upgrade on the desktop and gone back to IE6 to try to fix this mess.

Ran several utilities to no avail.
Disc cleanup - nothing
Chkdsc - nothing
Defragged - nothing
Restore - no points worked
Virus scan - nothing
Malware scan - nothing
Selective startup - nothing

Made all my backups today. Time for another system recovery in the morning. I always experiment on my desktop first before working on wifey's laptop. ;) Seems like these two dual cores always have the same problems at the same time.

Did my system recovery on the 22nd.

The ole Square-Headed-Girlfriend here is back to running like a track star on the dry oval. Timed it at 10½ seconds to complete boot-up. Life is sweet once again.:D

Most people do not have a choice. Windows update is very persistent. It nags you until you update. You have to turn off automatic updates. How many people are going to do this or know how.

I updated to IE7, and it changed my home page.
IE7 has some good features. It will check your internet connection, and you can work in full screen.
