Is there any way I can disable the dang thing, apart from using a hammer and chisel?

Do you mean disable caps lock permanently or turn it off so that you have upper and lower case characters?
If the latter, and the key is in the locked position, just click on the caps lock key again and it should turn it off - unless the key is broken/worn out.

No bobbi.
I mean for ever. I am constantly accidently hitting the dang cap button as I am typing in IM.... and it seems as if I am shouting...
I'm not up to the touch typing level yet... just means either I shout... or need to retype or do that alter font thingy... usually I just press send.. and opps
hammer and chisel looks the best option :)

Noooo, don't get the hammer! :D
The following should be able to help you:
Disable Caps Lock
http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/disable_caps_lock/
AntiCapsLock (not free)
http://www.orionsoft.cz/view.asp?tree=en&node=/Software/AntiCapsLock
If you're able to find a download site for the following, it is a free program: CapsUnlock. It had been available at: http://www.brainsystems.com/capsunlock/
It might be a glitch on my end but the site is not accessing for me right now.

A couple more sites:
Free program to disable Caps Lock:
http://www.worldinabox.co.uk/BoldFinger/
I've not tried the program.
Another how-to disable site:

P.S.: If you try one (or another) idea cited, could you please share which worked for you? It might offer a short cut for others by someone who's applied an idea or two.

I take my keyboard apart to clean it all the time. The keys just pull right off and snap right back on. If you want to, just take the damn key right off the keyboard like I did. Last time I had them off, I never put that one back on. Haven't hit it since.
Under the keys themselves is a sheet of rubber. The actual switching mechanisms, the electrical parts, are under that. You won't hurt anything by removing the key if you want to.

I took my (desktop PC) keyboard apart one time, thinking I'd clean it. I lost my grip and it bounced to the floor. The keys came off, along with the plastic sheet. I could never get it back together right  :D. Fortunately, HP shipped me a new keyboard - free .
Since then, I leave the keys alone ;).

Now that Bobbi mentions it, I SURE hope we're talking about a desktop keyboard.
Laptops are a little different. The keys are all part of a single overlay........

We can unite in our glad feelings; I'm happy that you pointed out the diff. between desktop and laptop keyboards.
I'm on a laptop and was using it when I read Bewolf's initial post. I just knew, though, no matter what type 'puter keyboard that a hammer would not be good for it ;).

You'd be surprised what you can fix with a hammer though. :p

a friend of mine had a male cat who was very jealous of her computer. one day while she was typing away and he couldn't get her attention he did on her keyboard what male cats do.
he got quite a shock. the vet bill cost more than the new computer.
but the main reason i clicked on reply here, before i got distracted, was to suggest putting some rough tape or taping something that sticks up on the caps lock. then when your finger feels it you will notice. i am an experienced touch typist, more than 50 years, and on this keyboard i constantly get the caps lock instead of the tab key.

I had an older Dell laptop that I gave to my son to use for a mobile 'puter on his work truck. Mostly just for a simple accounting and invoice program, lotsa numerics. One of the keys (either the 'e' or the 'a') got broken and lost. I merely took one of the 'hot' keys (that hasn't ever been used-no modem in the laptop) and replaced it by snapping it off and pressing it on the missing vowel key. (I think the replacement key was the 'windows logo' key)
