Hi I have a 13 year old daughter who had a grand mal last July and had an EEG in Aug that was abnormal. She was started on Lamictal. It has been steadily increased and she had another EEG last week. It also was abnormal. The only thing the neurologist does is increase her lamictal and tells me her EEG is abnormal. With much hasseling, I was able to get both EEG reports. I was hoping that by posting some of what the language is in them both, someone could help me with reading them.

Aug 2006 - Sleep deprived, 9-10 hertz, photic stimulation was done and a driving response was not apparent. Hyperventilation was not done. There was frequent, diffuse, high voltage polyspike and wave activity. There was independent diffuse polyspike and wave activity that may last for 2-3 seconds. The spells that last longer seemed to have a diffuse high voltage 3 hertz spike wave activity. I
nterpretation - Abnormal EEG because of generalized polyspike and wave activity. This is a nonspecific finding indicative of diffuse cerebral irritability and may be seen in a generalized type of seizures. 3 hertz spike wave activity which is diffuse. This is also seen in primary generalized type of seizures especially absence type.
April 2007 - Routine EEG done on 5 hrs sleep. 9 hertz, symmetrical, however, not well regulated but reactive to eye opening and closing.
Photic stimulation was done and a driving response was not apparent. Hyperventilation was performed for 3 minutes. The pt. became drowsy, followed by spindles and K-complexes along with phase reversing vertex sharp activities as she drifted into stage 2 sleep. There are frequent episodes of sharp and slow wave activity seen during hyperventilation and during photic stimulation. On some occasions there was spike and slow wave activities seen diffusly.
Interpretation - This EEG is abnormal because of the diffuse sharp and slow wave activity seen during hyperventilation and during photic stimulation suggestion a photoparoxysmal response. This is also suggestive of a primary generalized type of epilepsy.
I am sorry this is so long, but if anyone has any experience in reading EEG's I would appreciate some help. I have looked at a lot of the sites that have been posted on EEG results. She has been having seizures all along, and the dr. just doesn't seem to give me any info. I also have an 8 year old who has severe disabilities so I am not new to this world. Thanks, Cheryl
