Has anyone had hearing problems as a result of taking Topamax? If you believe that you have, please contact me. I am desperate to find out anything that I can.

I was taking Topamax two years ago and had all kinds of side effects, from the common ie: word finding problems, weight loss and dry skin to the not so common such as breathing difficulties.

However, about six months after starting it, I began to notice that my left ear felt stopped up all the time and I got a roaring noise in it. I also noticed that I couldn't hear as well

I went to an ENT and had my hearing tested and I have lost just about all of the hearing in my left ear. The Dr.'s can't tell me why. I haven't had any ear problems or been around any loud noises.

I believe that it was caused by the Topamax but, I cannot get a DR. to say that they think it could be the meds.

If there is anyone who has had this type of problem and you believe it might be from taking Topamax, please email me.

Thank You,
Mel

Hi Mel,
Check out the pdf for Topamax here.
http://www.topamax.com/active/janus/en_US/assets/common/company/pi/topamax.pdf#zoom=100
If you do a search in the pdf for "hearing" and "tinnitus" you'll bring up some noted adverse events. Page 5 I think it is, Table 7. In one drug site I just looked at, it didn't mention hearing loss at all, but another one of them did.

Drugs.com lists "hearing loss" in their list of rare side effects. Not sure how reliable Drugs.com is though. Someone else might know that.

You could maybe repost over on the Epilepsy Forum here... there might be others there who can help you.

all the best to you,
Lara

I will check those sights out. I actually did post this on the Epilepsy board and was led to a thread on the headache board about the side effects of Topamax. No one mentioned hearing problems but, there were so many others.

Thanks again,
Mel
