Hi ZombieSlayer. I know we covered all this in the old forum, but having aged since then, I can't remember. :( My McAfee AV will expire next week; I don't like Norton; is there anything 'better' than McAfee to install [I'm happy to buy it IF it is great!]. I tried to renew my McAfee last night, and there were two problems: they want way too much for a renewal from an 'existing' customer AND they will ONLY do an "automatic renewal" IF I do purchase.
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I don't like either, for the same reasons......and, I once 'tested' Norton's updates with my phone line physically disconnected from the wall -and Norton went thru about 3 seconds of 'updating' and told me that I 'now have the latest update installed'. It wasn't like a 'check' to see if it had been installed previously, but a 'false' installation process. I then went to the wall, re-plugged th phone line, and clicked 'update'- exact same procedure- Duh!
Whadda my payin fer? Nuttin?
Until you decide, install one of the free AV's like avast! or AVG - they also have 'paid' versions (I have both free ones). At least you'll have some protection until you find what you're looking for.

Thanks, Bob and Annie. I was thinking about doing AVG; I run it every so often anyway.
I'll look into both of those, Bob. It really irks me that I've been a "loyal" customer of McAfee, and now they are acting like real pains!!!

AVG is a great free virus scanner. As long as you occasionally do a scan from someplace like trendmicro it's all you need :)

AVG is going to take more than an hour to download the installation stuff, longer still for the other two parts. can this be right? i am on dial up.
now i am downloading trend micro. you can't use this website with text set on extra large. so far i haven't needed to use their icons tho. this is very slow. ok there it goes. now it says 1-1/4 hours. it is now 2:40 if this takes more than well adaware takes 20 minutes so i guess i should give it an hour.
just took their survey and pointed out how difficult they are for the disabled to use.
it is now three and the 1-1/4 hour changed to one hour. think i will go take a nap.
it scanned for two and a half hours. all it found was 28 cookies, two of which i need.
now i don't know what it is doing. will it tell me when it is thru? are the icons that i can't see the problem, probably.
now it is upset about a jpeg buffer overrun but i can't figure out what it is talking about. guess it is done.that is a lot of time to find a couple of cookies.

Annie if you didn't get it downloaded then I'll put them on my site for you to download.
Direct link no buttons ;)
I should've done that the first time around, sorry.

do you know these people? you might suggest a text page for the disabled. no blind person could use that site. when i took their survey i pointed this out and suggested it would be better if they were W3 compliant. do i trust the programming of people who are not W3 compliant?
got the trend thing to scan. it found four cookies, two of which i needed. one of which i really really needed. it took me from about two unti five to do this. more than three hours.
then i ran adaware which found 48 thingies that it didn't like. the new version does not change my home page any more, this makes me happy since i always keep blank as my home page so that i don't get graphical suprizes.
tomorrow i will try AVG again. one hour is surely going to be faster than three, even tho i panicked. another good thing now is that i don't get dropped in these long downloads. that used to make me very crazy, download for half an hour and get dropped and start again and get dropped. i had something that was supposed to restart the download where it got dropped but it never worked. the isp i have now is very good. dialup but it is really good. and cheap.
i am so glad to have you in my corner while i wrestle alligators.
i bought a bike horn the other day. it is an alligator head. it sits on my computer and i blow it when i get frustrated. gets rid of the other alligators.
thanks again, more tomorrow.

No I don't know those people and telling them their not W3C compliant is a waste of typing :(
As for the alligator horn.... :) Annie you're such a character (and I mean that in the best possible way) :)

hey, john has never had another flood after he protected the server with rubber duckies.
maybe the whole server crash could have been prevented if he had protected the server with an alligator horn?
i am downloading AVG

it took an hour and a half to download AVG. when i tried to install it it said that some of the files were corrupted and i needed to download it again.
i honked my alligator at it.

Have you been able to download AVG alligator free?
annie
10-19-2006, 01:17 AM
just starting. it is now a quarter after nine. we will see.
that is encouraging, it is a different version from the one i downloaded last night.
1 hour 32 min at about 4 kb/sec.
to be continued.
the alligator is standing guard.
three hours later. it downloaded without any problems, took an hour and a half. installed without any problems.
obviously the alligator horn scared it into behaving.
i ran a full scan and saw the three most beautiful words in the english language "no viruses found"
why does it make more sense to say that a computer has a virus than it does to say that a computer has alligators?

ok, it seems to be happy.
this evening when i booted up it ran again, didn't find anything. it takes an hour to scan, is it going to mess anything up if i go online before it finishes?
i don't understand what it is doing with scanning e mail. i use two e mail programs.
i use eprompter to access four yahoo accounts and one pop account. when eprompter starts AVG pops up and says it is scanning the pop account. eprompter is simultaneously logging into the pop and into all four yahoos. avg doesn't mention the yahoos.
then i use outlook express for four hotmail accounts. it does not make any mention of scanning outlook express.
the pop up icon telling me it is scanning the pop3 account spins and really bothers me. is there a way to turn it off? fortunately it is only there for a very short time, but if it comes up for scanning every e mail account i am going to have a problem.
very comforting to know that i don't have any virus.

No you should be able to go online while it's scanning. Your surfing may be a little slower during the scan but I'm not sure.
As for the icon thingy I'll look into it. I don't have avg scanning emails or on auto scan. Twice a week I update it (if it finds any) and run the scan when I want to.

If you go online while you do a virus scan, not only surfing may be slower,
but the scan may take up to 50%-60% longer. It can slow down the virus scan.

wow am i slower. i am on a very cheap dialup which meets my needs most of the time but this is slowing me by half.
also slowing me is the automatic update. how do i turn off automatic scan and automatic update? i usually leave the computer on all day, shut down when i go to bed. i am only on line when i am actually on line. so if i could scan after i go off line it would work much better, and if i could download after i finish what i am doing on line that would help a lot.
right now i have three AVG icons. the one on the desktop i can get rid of, but i have two in the task bar. one with a little yellow triangle, this is the one that rotates when it is scanning my pop e mail account.
i am so glad you are here.

oh good grief. well obviously i need to disable automatic scanning. the scan offline is currently taking more than an hour.
another problem with the slowness is that i am not always getting yellow alt tag boxes when i mouseover graphics. since i have all graphics turned off (yes flash is really still gone) i rely heavily on those yellow things to navigate. now they are not there well got one but it was a thirty second mouseover.
but it surely is nice to know that this new machine doesn't have anything. that AVG or trendmicro can find. yet.
actually the worst virus i ever had turned out to be bad disk handling. taking a floppy out of the drive before closing the program. nothing happens until the end of the semester, at which point one of your pointers breaks and you lose your entire semester's work. just before you have to turn it in.
now i close everything. slowly. one at a time. with pauses in between. i never had a problem with 98.
