I have a long story and I am not good at writing so forgive me.
I have Fibomyalgia for 18 years. I have a very good Dr that I have been going to for 12 years. He trys to help me with my pain but he just wouldn't go any higher than 5/500 vic 1 to 2 every 6 hours. I told him it just wasn't working like it did 3 years ago. He never said any just wrot out for my 5/500. Well back on Aug 8th 06 I tore both of my achilles tendons. I was running across the hwy to pick up what I let on top of the roof of my car. I took 3 steeps and bamm. I heard something pop. I couldn't move. Here are these cars going my with me in the middle. Well I had to crawl back to my car. I got to my moms which I was in front of when I did this. I got her and she drove me to the ER At the ER they sent me to the orthopaedic surgeon. You know you have to fill out all the paper work. I did just so and put now ALL my meds. Well the Dr told be that I had tore bout Achilles tendons but not all the way He put me in a boot for the worse one and he said let try to see if they will heal on their on. Well he said he was going to give me pers 7.5/700 I told him I was on pain meds and he said they ard just not strong to took care of my pain. Said for me to take these and if the pain was so bad at times to take the others. So that is what I did. I had appt with my reg dr a few weeks later and I told him what the other Dr put me on and how he told me to take them. Well came dec the had not healed my doing MRIS. said he had to do surgery. Jan 12 had appt with reg dr and told him they were going to do surgery. Told him the Dr gave me per 7.5/700 for after the sugery. Well I had the sugery the 16the of jan. I came home the next day and the Dr gave my hubby ocodone20 mg 20 pills to take 1 every 12 hours. So hubby got them and I was in bed and he showed me the meds and I didn't know what they were so I had hubby look it up but I had took 1 before he did look it up. Hubby came back in the room and told me it was a bad drug and that drug addicts use them. scared me to death. I didn't take them. I went to my reg dr in march and he said I was taking to much meds and he couldn't give me any more I showed him the bottle of ocodone a full bottle he said take those. I asked if it was safe and he said yes. Then we talked and he did his thing and he ask how I felt about pain mangment. I told him that would be fine I had no trouble with it. I stoped all meds and never went thought withdraw. And My dr gave me Tramadol and told me to try them. That is what I am on now it works to some what but my rib pain it will not even touch. I am dowm to a 4-6 pain till about 4-5 hours my pain goes back to a 7-9. I only take the tramadol every 6 hours 100mg. I went to the PM and they can't help me on my Fibor only my back. Now I did evey thing the Dr told me to do and told each dr what I was on. I Alway took my meds every4-6 hour to which one I took. If my pain in my heels were bad I would take the 7.5/700 that day and it was 2 every 4 hours. I really don't understand how I was taking to much meds. I never got high that I know of. it just took my pain down to a 2-3. Why does my dr think I was taking to much meds when I with by what was said on the bottle. It has got me afaid to call my Dr and ask if he can send me to another PM that can take care of all my problems. I don't want any one to think I am looking for drugs. I don't care what they do to me if they say you will be out of pain if you stand on your head for 5 mins I would do it. I am a 51 year old lady that would like to have my life back. I love to fish and I can't do that any more or work in my yard. What am I to do some help please

So so long

Welcome Deb! I'm sorry to hear of your current situation, my sister-in-law has fibro., and she tells me it's no fun at all. There are a lot of Dr.'s today that are afraid or won't prescribe narcotics, My Ortho. surgeon wouldn't give me anything higher than Vicodin. A good Pain Management Dr. will take the time to listen, and work with you to get the right mix of meds. I've been with mine since 09/05 and we are still trying to get the right mix. We're close and I'm sure she will get me as comfortable as possible soon!:) Just my opinion, but if you find the right PM Dr. you will find that they understand different meds. have to be tried and don't think of their patients as "Drug Seekers". I'm sure they have some trying to get drugs from them and they know the difference. I sure hope you find a good PM Dr. and things look up for you soon. Again WELCOME and please let us know how thing go for you!!;)

Hugs....

Most of us know how hard it can be to get adequate pain control.

Get the referral to pain mgmt if he'll let you - and if he won't - switch doctors....

Deb, I hope the new PM can help and isn't afraid of the meds. You need a PM that is concerned about treating your pain and as long as you are using med to treat pain and not using them for anything else the doctor and you should have no problem with it.

You need to make a decision about the opiates. Either they are legitimate pain meds or as your husband put it 'told me it was a bad drug and that drug addicts use them. scared me to death'. Many of us have been on opiates for long term pain relief and we are not drug addicts. We used other meds but finally the pain becomes to overwhelming and opiates may be the best option.

Good luck with your appointment and I hope you finally get adequate pain relief.

I have learn so much about pain med in the last few months. I can't tell you how dumb I am when it came to pain meds. Just reading on here as help me so much. when I didn't know something I would go to Ask.com to see what i was and side effets it had ect... Like one off the top of my head is methadome (spelling wrong sorry) I alway thought it was for drug users comeing off drugs. Now I know that it is one of the best drugs for pain. Not for all but for most. See you are never to old to learn. Right now I am open to any thing that would help me in my pain. If that means standing on my head. I will go with what the PM day that will help.
I don't know when my appt is yet I just called my Dr office and talked to his nurse. She thinks that it would be good to go to 1 place for every thing that is going on with me. She will let me know when the appt is.

I try and learn what I can now and I write every day in a book to how my pain is each day and what I do to try and help it go away.

This has to be the best board ever
Thank you for careing
((((HUGS))))

Deb, it is never too old to learn, my wife and I were talking after getting my approval for SSDI about the advantages/disadvantages of medicare. She said, can you believe at our age we don't know these answers.

Methadone is an effective pain med but one that is difficult to use unless the doctor and patient are very knowledgeable about the half-life of the med. There are other opiates that do just as well for some of us and one thing to learn here is not one medicine works for all of us. It may take you a while to find the right pain med/dose for you but be patient and keep pushing until you have adequate pain relief.
