My doc prescribed Imitrex. It is very effective, I get them very badly. The only side effect is that it makes me a little sleepy but everyone is different. I also take Excedrin Migraine which amazingly for over the counter works great. Good luck.

jonathon,
There are many medications out there. You need to find a good neurologist and let him/her get started with you. Many of us who have chronic migraines have tried a good bakers dozen of medications before they find something that is effective for them and some of us never do. Most medications have side effects and so it is always a crap shoot between the side effects and the effectivenss of the medication. There is a headache forum here you might want to try to get a better idea of what migraneurs go through to find some relief.
Regards,
Lisa

First off, I do agree with going to a doctor. My own personal experience of 25 years of migraines - the best combo of meds I've ever been on is Topomax nightly for prevention or at least diminishing of frequency and Relpax (similar to Imitrex) for when I do get them. The only reason I went on the Topomax is because my headaches were becoming so frequent and you're not supposed to take pills like Imitrex and Relpax too often. I stared a couple months ago, and I've had one migraine, down from about 5-8 a month.
