 Hi

Just spent hours searching the internet to find something on 'unexplained weight loss in cats' but couldn't find much at all.

My cat Siss is approx. 14 years old and although she's eating well is now skin and bone.
$380 later Vet visit and he took blood tests but nothing out of the ordinary showed up.
The vet said he would have to do further tests regarding possible cancer. Shouldn't a blood test show this?

Siss is gorgeous (well all mothers think that). She talks to me and has a wonderful personality but today after the vet visit she wont even look at me.
She screamed when the needles went in.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem.

Funny thing, I've forgotten about all my problems - animal love will do that !!

Cheers.

Hi Jaycee, I feel for you. My cat is named Sissy! She's still a young 5yr old though.

From my experience I'd say cancer & forego further testing @ her age. Of course this is a decision only you can make. We had an old cat 21yrs! She had cancer in the end & got down to absolute skin & bones,we had her put down when she had difficulty getting around & hardly ate.

Our dog Mary (I've ranted about this on other threads here), first had skin cancer which was obvious, had 6 lesions removed. Then she kept losing weight & after hundreds $$$ more on tests that were sent out of state....she had cancer inside (forget where), and we had to put her down. It was horrid & I'll never forgive that vet for insisting it wasn't cancer. She suffered needlessly, actually collapsed on a walk in the woods with me, I ran back to house screaming for help cause no way could I lift her even though she had gone from 114# to 75#!

Sorry I'm getting into another rant, my whole point is that NO, blood tests do not always detect cancer. Vet had Mary on iron supplements & very pricey special food when all that time she was dying......

BIG,gentle hug to you & know that I understand how hard this is & wish I could wave a magic wand over Sis and make her all well.

Hopefully someone else might have different input for you,Buttons

jacyee i am so sorry about your cat. i hope it is not serious but i'd opt for not putting her through much if it does turn out to be something serious. our pets go through a period that that don't eat as well when it starts getting warmer. has that happened where you live? the weather got hot or anything else unusual? i just noticed that our dog still eats grass even though he is inside most of the time. guess there is a reason for that so i'll have to give him time to run around outside more in case he has things like that he needs to do.
