Hey All,

I just got back from my PM visit and he did give me an injection into the right shoulder joint. What relief for now anyway!!! :) I was amazed how he went in from the front of the shoulder but I could feel the numbing medicine go clear back to the shoulder blade. Just goes to show I guess how all of those muscles connect to each other. But he said based on the relief I got and where, it is indicative of tendonitis. Which is what I have thought all along. But he did say if I didn't get significant relief, then he would have to look at the other cervical levels. But to give this about two weeks, see what happens, and if it works, to come back and get the other shoulder done. I was able to reach further. And this sounds silly but sometimes when I push myself up off the floor my wrist and top of hand would hurt. So, I tried it while there and didn't feel any pain. So, I just have to wait and see.

Okay, and just for kicks and since he is a SPINAL PM and his speciality is headaches coming from the neck, I asked him about the pain scale. So, I put it like this. I asked him, "The majority of the patients you see are people with cervicogenic headaches right?" He says, "Yes, every day!" Then I asked him, "Okay, so on the average, based on the pain scale, what would you say is their pain level?" He said, "By the time they reach me they are at a 9." I laughed and said, "Okay, I blew it! I always rate them a 10 because they are so horrible!" But then he added (because he has had two cervical fusions), "I get them all the time. When they are bad, they are normally a 6 or 8. But when they are severe, they are a definite 9! BUT they FEEL like 10 because I am ready to fall over. But I TRY to reserve a 10 for near dying experiences." Of course he was teasing and such but he also added they are tough to treat.

Anyway, then in all seriousness when I was done with the injection, he came out into the waiting area. Of course he was asking how I felt, etc. But then I said, "I don't know if you know this or not but I am applying for SSD because....

Before I could finish he says, real forceful, "I would support you 100%!" I kind of stopped for a minute because I really thought he might say...carry on or something of that nature. But noooooo! He said, "Based on the spinal issues and everything else you have going on...yes, 100%!" I don't want to go into everything else he said in regards to working even part time. Just suffice to say I was very pleased to hear this.

Oh, I do want to add and can add that he did say that the nature of this is so unpredictable that that is the biggest problem. I wanted to hug him because it is so true. The pain and the meds is bad enough but the unpredictablity is something else let alone more discs slowly going perhaps. He and I are both at risk for the "domino effect" and has already told me that we both have bought maybe 5 years before something else may go. So, there you have it. I just felt very good that he was validating what I have been saying all along which is...I NEVER KNOW what is going to happen next. One day I am doing fairly well and then the next...WHAM! And, no, I am not crazy LOL!

So, I have a lot of paperwork to fill out this weekend. :)

It is nice to hear you got good news at the PM. I hope the relief stays with you for a while and it is really good to hear it provided relief all the way back through your traps. Maybe in two weeks you can go back and have the other shoulder done and have both of them doing better. Once one muscle tightens up it causes problems in the surrounding muscle groups and can cause us havoc. I hope helping your shoulder muscle relax will provide the relief you need in all the other muscle groups the way it has so far.

Your day has gotten off to a great start:) . i hope the rest of your day goes as well.

Before I had any of this myopathy stuff going on, I had tendinitis in my shoulder (rotator cuff and biceps tendon) b/c of being on swim team for years, and it was painful. I ended up needing surgery for it. I am glad the shot gave you some relief.

Thank you both Mark and Kira,

I am hoping this gives me relief but it will take some time; more than likely two weeks or more. So, I need to keep it moving with light tasks and just not lift or do any heavy work.

I am just more thrilled about the SSD conversation! :) It is just more added relief to this other.

I forgot to put down in my other post about what he said about reports from GP's. Basically, that it continues to amaze him when they don't fully understand what we endure. But he understands because he has the same problems. And he wouldn't mind one bit spelling it out for anyone (as in reporting). :) Like I said, I just felt validated because there are more issues than just the spinal ones and he knows of them.

I too am glad to hear your appointment went well. I am seriously starting to think that I should travel to Indiana to see your spine doctors as well :D

Doctors are more compassionate when they have been through the same situations as their patients.

I hope your shot ends up helping you and lessens your pain.

I also wish you well on your future SSA endeavors. In case you didn't know you can fill out the inital application on-line. Hopefully your experience with them will be quick and to your advantage.
It took me almost 3 years before I was awarded benefits. My attorney was very helpful but it was really my congressman's office that helped me the most. If things don't go as smoothly as you would like you should consider contacting your Congressman's office as well but hopefully you won't need to.

Good luck !

Thank you Glenn,

They are a wonderful group and I know they take patients from out of state. Mark N also goes to a great group. If you want, I can PM you with the phone number of mine. But I would still wait if you can, and get with your NS.

And it seems to be true in regards to my PM. He has told me repeatedly he KNOWS what we (spinal) folks feel like and is very compassionate. I keep forgetting things. But this particular injection seemed to take longer. He did say before he did it that he would try to be extra easy. It was not bad at all just pressure is all I really felt.

Oh, and I beat you to it. I have already done ALL of my application process online and it took me a looooooooong time because I wrote a book in the Remarks section LOL! But at least I have a copy and can reference it when I start in on the new paperwork this weekend. :)

Great to hear Kathi!

I know what you mean about not knowing what will happen next and when. With my MS, I deal with that along with my spinal pain as well.

Quahog - I was completely paralysed on my left side for over 3 months and STILL got denied for SSDI back in 1993, so I know it can be hard! It's like, what the hell do they want?!

Jena,

The whole process is extremely frustrating. I have worked for the federal government most of my life so I am used to the "red tape". But it is as you said, "What the hell do they want?" LOL The frustration comes in in continually repeating and updating everything. It is form after form after form. You would think I would be used to it by now LOL! As just applying for a promotion takes an Act of God to complete. :)

Anyway, I had a long talk about this with my husband the other night. And he had some great recommendations. Well, I did some of that today with my PM. I believe my Neurologist will follow based on things she has said in the past. She is the one that said, "Watch it, or you may end up a surgical cripple." And, this last time she said, "I will shoot you if you have another fusion!" But then I said, "Okay, but what if another disc closes is on the spinal cord?" And then she laughed and said, "Well, you will have to have another fusion!" So, see...it is ongoing!

Kathi, you are right that it is the unending up dates that drove me crazy. The same info but different forms so you couldn't just copy and send it in. Once I got my attorney that stopped as the attorney handled all the contacts with SSA. I only had to do phone up-dates with the attorney so she knew what was current. Hang in there and play the system as they have created the rules and you can't get around them.

Mark,

Once I get the attorney paperwork filled out and mailed in, that's it. And then I can take it from there with him. And, I know, the system is tough and no getting around it...I agree. :) I just feel much more upbeat about this today even though I know I am in for a long haul.
