Question for you all, I've been on a low dose oxcodone hcl 10mg 2x a day for the last month, we've finally figured out that it's been causing me not to be able to sleep at night, where I fall asleep and then wake up often, so I'm not getting a good nights sleep anymore, it's been decided to get me off the drug, do I really need to ween myself off of this, my pain doc. says no because it's only been a month, but I always thought you had to ween yourself off these drugs.

Thanks!

I hate blanket statements. I know I would be able to come off of that dose with no problem at all but we are all different. Best wishes.

Scooby truthfully everyone is different. Also part of it may depend on which med your PM is swiching you too. Good luck!!

Scooby, everyone is different and I was able to come off of it after using it for a year and having no withdrawal effects [my body is different about that]. I would say after one month you would have minimal troubles. Good luck with stopping the use of Oxy, are you going to use something else for the pain?

Mark, as of right now, I'm not going on anything, I'm having trouble with medications especially dealing with my immune disorders my docs don't know what to do. So for now I'm just to do tylenol, heat or ice whatever feels better, I'm also going to do accupuncture. I haven't slept a goo solid night since being on the oxycontin and it's put my immune system in a flare so I need to come off the drugs, last night was the first night I didn't take it and slept much better, and I didn't take it this morning, so far I don't feel any side effects with withdrawal.

Scooby have you and your PM thought about adding a sleep aide? I use one with the Oxy and it does work unless my pain levels are just too high. Just food for thought.

Scooby, gald to hear that you are already getting good results from stopping the use of Oxy. I hope your pain levels can be managed without it as pain can cause you to lose sleep too. I was able to treat my pain with tylenol for years but it finally increased enough that I couldn't manage it any longer. I hope you continue to not have an withdrawal issues and your pain stays at manageable levels.

You should be ok but you could have a bit of W/D and if you do just ride it out and remember the experience as a mild case of what it can be like.

I believe too many Drs write scripts for LA meds for short term problems, a few that have been in the news bring this to light, few need LA medications post op or for a short period when the patient is expected to recover in a few months, dependency is going to happen and it is easier to prescribe less short acting meds as a person makes progress then stopped without concern.

Yawning and an urge to sleep usually come first then being awake unable to sleep, runny nose agitation and frequent visits to the bathroom usually follow as well as a desire to float in water?

After taking MSContin for almost 10 years, I begin to have the effects at 18 hours, less with the brand name or the Mylan generic, Endo does last longer.

After a period of severe pain and relief from an ESI if I may feel desire to cut my dose (especially in the summer) and know the feelings well.

I have learned not to fear this and enjoy going to the bathroom and once I am stable on a lower dose I am ok but the increased pain is going to show up as the ESI wears off; my Doc sees it and prescribes more without any request from me.

I see many posts about fearing a Dr visit or asking for an increase, I had the same fears in 2000 and changed Drs, he raised me to 60mg 3 times a day, I have never needed more; the anxiety over the possibility of uncontrolled nerve pain was gone with the first ESI.

If you have pain that needs treatment there are other medications you can try, oxycodone works fine with me but I get the jitters and I feel the need for more to get the same pain relief, it is a bad long-term choice for me.

The morphine jitters left quickly as did the pain, I have gone from 120 a day to 180mg, I get good relief when I use the lower dose to fit my activities, if I have nothing planned I refrain from taking them as often.

Good luck

Joey, are you taking Ms Contin ER? My dose right now due to my lower back pain is 200mg. every eight hours. I also take Neurontin 2400mg. daily, Klonopin 1mg. at night. Promethyzine 75mg. a day and Lactulose for constipation. My breakthrough Med. is MS Contin 30mg. IR as needed up to 3 times per day. I kind of guess I'm asking everyone here, Is that a high dose of Medications? Before this all started the most I ever took was aspirin. I just worry about my Kidneys and Liver and if you folks think these are high doses. Just as a footnote, these are the bear minimum I can take to have as close to a normal life as possible. Without these medicines I wouldn't be able to walk. Thanks in advance for any answers!
