Not sure if you remember me. Kim. I was on here a little bit about a year or 2 ago. Anyway I still get e-mails from the TNA newsletter and I got this today and thought you guys would be interested in reading it. I'm sure many of you are signed up for the same news letter but just thought I would post it anyway. :D
GSK LOOKING FOR CLINICAL STUDY PARTICIPANTS
Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline is recruiting patients for an ongoing clinical trial. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the trial seeks to evaluate the effects of the anticonvulsant drug lamotrigine (trade name Lamictal) on neuropathic facial pain or neuralgia
Currently there are no pharmacological agents that can control neuropathic pain to the same degree that antibiotics control bacterial infection. All current neuropathic pain drugs have approximately the same effectiveness of less than 30% in controlled trials, and it is not know how many of these drugs work fMRI studies may provide insight into how brain circuitry is altered by chronic pain, and how these drugs act on altered circuitry.
The trigeminal system in particular offers unique advantages for studying such alterations, including a large central representation and high degree of somatotopy. The administration of lamotrigine to neuropathic pain patients, in conjunction with fMRI, will allow us to compare subjective ratings of pain with objective measures of neural activity during increased conditions of allodynia/hyperalgesia.
Clinical researchers at Harvard University are enrolling facial pain patients in either of two studies; trigeminal neuropathy or neuralgia. Both studies involve medication. Interested participants must, at a minimum, meet the following criteria. 1) less than 60 years of age2) at least 3 month history of pain3) allodynia (abnormal painful sensitivity to touch or brushing of the affected region)4) able to communicate in English Please contact Sadie Cole, Clinical Research Assistant, at 617-855-3156 for more information.
