Heads up to anyone using canned or pouched dog food made by IAMS,Nutra,Eukanuba, etc.

go to this site for complete list of all brands involved:

http://www.menufoods.com/recall

Depending on your news source, 10-20 pets have already died of kidney failure, they are still trying to narrow down the ingredient. Supplies are being pulled off shelves.

Hope none of you will lose a cherished pet over this, please pass the word along to others.

Always said table scraps were the best.....just kidding!

aahyee i give up! you can't win. my son in law has spent a fortune on vet bills and just discovered that a certain pill he had been giving did not cover heart worm as he'd been led to believe. i think the vet and everybody has his number because we had the full treatment for heart worms for our dog and it was not the price they got quoted! anyhow after going up there and complaining and showing their bills where indeed they had purchased the stuff i think they will get a better cost. should for all they are out. dogs get better care than my daughter!

thanks for the tip. i need to bookmark this.

Hi Dude, I urge everyone to spread the word about this, not everyone has a computer & you'd be amazed how many people never watch TV news or read a newspaper!

It's all over the news now, but this started several months ago! How heartbreaking for the owners of these infected pets!

And this all ties into a theory I've had about gluten & humans, ever wonder why so many people are on gluten free diets? I sure have! I tried it myself but never managed to stick to it, the research was interesting, gluten is in many products besides food. Ever check out the gluten forums here? One of the busiest there is!

We cannot blindly trust any food source these days.

Also, want to point out even Western Family is on the list of possibly infected foods. The gluten came from Kansas so this isn't just a Canadian issue.

Rat Poison!!! How cruel and sick can some people be? However, the verdict isn't in yet on how this stuff got into the pet food so suppose I shouldn't be so quick to judge. But after the Tylenol episode a few years ago, the depravity of man (just a general term) is well known.

I just hope every pet owner has seen this by now and got rid of the culprit. My couple cans of "Mighty Dog" hit the trash in a hurry! Our faithful friends certainly deserve better!!!

When I first checked the link to the company there were 49 brands listed. Then I heard on TV news there are 100. Also heard they suspect the wheat gluten came from China. Does anyone really know the TRUTH??

It's terrible to think of the families spending thousand's of $$ to save their pets, only to have them die. Sometimes several pets in one household.

This is soooooo sad & unfair. I've never been too keen on canned food for the critters, it's smelly & messy + expensive. I'm glad now that I only use dry food but still......we can't be 100% safe no matter what!

our dog is so spoiled to canned food now. and rightly so. i hate to tell this but i will. when dogs were on the farm and mother had moved down here with us, we left out dry food in those big self-feed things. i hate to think of the bugs and critters that shared the food with the dogs. but it was the best i could do at the time. that is why i'm trying my best to treat this last dog right. so if he wants canned food, he gets it. but it is messy and hard for me to open the cans. i can't manage the electric opner and have to use a spoon to pry up the pull top lids, then get a pair of wire plyers and finish taking off the top. not easy with numb hands.

what is a good kind of dry food? i haven't tried them all. so i could buy a small bag and see if he would eat it.

Joy, there's alot to choose from in dogfood as you know! Rags & Pepper are eating Kirkland brand from Costco. They were eating very pricey food the groomer was selling but I said no to that finally, Candidae??(something like that, not sold in grocery stores & $30+per bag).

I'm a huge fan of Cesar Millan & he feeds all those dogs @ the rehab center a mixture of canned/dry Pedigree.

I suggest you mix the canned w/dry to get Meaness used to it. Just don't feed any food with corn products, not good for doogies!

I switch from lamb to chicken just for some variety. Both dogs also eat human food, real steak, chicken, eggs, cheese, some veggies. Pepper will NOT eat dry food without real people food in it! I don't care that everyone says no table scraps, if it's good enough for me to eat how can it harm a dog? I always cut it up small so no chance of choking. The vet says to feed Rags cheap hot dogs to train him, no way! Nothing but sodium & additives!

Funny you just mentioned bugs getting in dogfood holder, yesterday I found ants inside the container I keep in my trailer with cat food for Sissy! Yum,yum. Guess I'll sell the vintage cookie jar & get some Tupperware to store the cat food.....

hi buttons

well glad you answered. we do the pedigree thing. always on the canned and sometimes on the dry. we change out the dry food more than the canned. and now never expect him to eat just dry like he had to on the farm while we were away or on vacations. there is one kind of bone that he will chew on for a treat but as for biscuits, or any other thing sold for doggie treat, he usually will not touch. the vet cannot even reward him for being good when he visits, lol.

oh yes, we have on occasion tried the hot dog bit but there too he is not all that crazy about it. so far his best treat is the small amount of canned whipped cream he gets. i'm hoping as long as i don't give him too much of it it will be okay. we will certainly go over all this the next visit to the vet. i hope that's not too far off. i just need to see when he gets his next shots, etc.

for now i have finally got the ball rolling for myself. i am going to see my pain care doctor next friday. i had hoped to put that off until closer to warm weather, meaning, i want to ride the jet ski and i will have to have warm water. but can't wait that long. so hopefully soon i will be able to muster up enough energy to at least let him out while i ride the golf cart. i'm not even up to that right now. so dog is getting low spirits right along with me.

thanks for taking the time to answer.

Latest news I just read is that dry pet food may also be infected. FDA is claiming melamine (a type of plastic) is the culprit. What alarms me is that nobody is calling for any recalls yet on the brands possibly involved,BUT they say private brands which would be what we feed our dogs!

I'm about to go buy a bunch of ground beef & feed them that thoroughly cooked!

Just had both dogs back to vet yesterday for the kennel cough & vet was preplexed that Rags isn't coughing too, so now says Pepper didn't have it! They both got the nasal spray for kennel cough. All that money on anti-biotics & for what? I'll get cough syrup next time.

Plus, Rags refuses to take anymore of his anti-biotics for the skin staph infection & it's still red.....I'm still using the anti-bacterial pads on his skin but guess only time will tell if it clears up or not.

And I have a stupid question, why put dogs on anti-biotics if kennel cough is viral? I thought anti-biotics were for bacterial? Have I truly lost my mind?

Rags began to howl the minute we pulled into the vet's parking lot. Vet also informed us he thinks Rags is a younger dog than anyone figured, in other words still very much in the puppy stage.....

well that's good if rags is a younger dog. i beginning to wish i were a younger something, lol. sorry about the cost of the antibotics. yes i think you are right about that viral thing.

we don't have a costco store. is ther another name brand that could be the same stuff maybe? i think my dog has just got spoiled as he dide have to eat old dry food for years. but he was hasppily running free then and who knows what all he did find to eat on his own. many (did i say many, practically ALL) times meanness would be the only dog brave enough to go through the fence. he just does not care how hard the shocks are, he wanted his freedom. but now he seems happy to be inside. so i'm hoping there aren't any unknow things going on. it hasn't been all that long ago he was at the vets.

poor rags, he's had enough of the vet. my dog does not even take their treats, lol. hopefully all our pets will get over whatever it is that is develing them. still gotta find out about that spot. he has not been at it much if any lately. boy it is hot here now 80 plus degrees!

I am wondering about how many pets have died than is known.
Loads of people don't have the luxuary of affording a visit to a vet and may lose their beloved pet because of this food.
I'll bet its hundreds lost instead of the reported 16 deaths.
How many misdiagnosed....look at how many of us humans who never have gotten a simple diagnosis, let alone our pets.
Here's proof there are ROTTEN pet owners....
These people we know spend money on junk...they got a dog, a Corgie, paid hundreds of dollars for it. Last month I learned it got attacked by rogue dogs that roam the "hood". It suffered 2 weeks, then finally got taken to the vet when it was yelping round the clock....its intestines had fallen out and were gangrene!
The owner new it was suffering....but let this dog suffer like this.
They own a huge motorhome, then went out that same weekend and purchased a year old travel trailer for a parant to live in on their property.
This same owner purchased $100 worth of hair clips a few weeks ago, then claims couldn't afford to take that poor dog to the vet when it was first attacked:eek: How horrid is this? I am soooo disgusted with these people. Have no right to own even a pet rattlesnake!
These same people allowed their miniture horse to suffer for over a year being penned up in muddy area, got hoof rot....painful! I begged for her to give me the horse she never paid attention to...so I could have it treated and at least allow it to roam our property and get out of the elements when needed....but this person is selfish! Would rather her pets suffer and die like they have instead of letting go of them. I just don't get it!
There atto be a law against such people! Cheryl

i hate to hear how animals are mistreated also. now you know why we got 4 puppies instead of the one i wanted to replace my cat that had just died. we went to farm and a dog was yelping. she scarffed up our leftover food we had with us (mother was already staying with us full time but we had been to a function at fire department). we tracked down where it lived, at my neices. we later went back and got MEM for in memory off my cat. later i'd see small dogs at our lake and they looked like sking and bones. the girls both my neics' and her husbands kids said how many had gotten run over already and that they kept going missing. so there you have it four gorls, four remaining dogs. and the girld came to see them maybe one time. won't get fooled like that again. not with four!!!

i believe if you take in an amimal you should try your best to take care of it. if you are so bad off, there are some places that will give discounts if you just ask. i know some people ave a hard time keeping kids clothes but they should try and remember that an animals needs food, shelter and medicine in it's lifetime. i am a BIG believer in taking care of the problem befor so have my animals fixed as soon as they are old enough.

but there are good people too cheryl. our neighbor asked if he could have a bassett hound anothr neighbor was not taking care of.. he got it and took it to vet! that makes me feel better to know some do give them up if they don't take care of them. i was on the verge of turning in my own neice the next time she let a litter od dogs be treated that way. always big ideals of raising purebread dogs and selling for big bucks. but don't keep watch and then don't care about litter that is not purebred. not right.

we just plunked down our money to have meanness checked out after the alpo incident.

and for buttons, yep, vet said cultured plain youget, no milk or whipped creme.

MEANNESS WEIGHS 72.9 pounds! he's gained right along with me, lol.

Hopefully we can soon be assured that we're not killing off our pets by feeding them!

Joy, I've heard of dogs not eating their food unless it's mixed with cottage cheese. I hate the stuff myself so never have it around, I do however let Rags lick the spoon when it has sour cream on it......hey, he deserves to be spoiled after all he's been through!

hi buttons. our vet said no 2% milk or the whipped cream. know why? they can get pancreatitis from it. now with having a daughter with pancreatitis i had to ask hubby if i heard that right! i did. i never knew the why behind not giving it to dogs. i know now it is a legatimate reason so i will refrain from it. when i said our dog does not like just dry food the vet said
"if he gets hungry enough he will eat it" ! guess that settles that for us spoiling our dog. we have spent more on meanness than any other pet we've had. and we have spent a lot on one that had been hit by car and had to have heart worm treatments on top of his first check-up fee. something all the time for sure!
