OMG - I can't believe something like this happened but it did, and what a shocker.
Last week I was trying to catch up on some home improvements, and also had a couple of doctors appointments which Theo didn't want to go to so he stayed home alone, which he is fine doing at this point. Before anyone gets worried about the home alone thing, I have to say.... seriously, he is safer alone than he is with a babysitter. That's another story.

Anyway, we didn't do any school all week except for exercise, and on Friday when I told him I had to go pick up a lab form from the doctor and then go to the lab, he told me he wanted to do some work while I was gone.
Wooowwww. I got out the three main workbooks and a couple of pencils and said goodbye - figuring he would change his mind as soon as I left - but NO! When I get back, the kid has done one page out of each book in the neatest handwriting ever.

What is UP with him? I was dancing around and telling him he was the best homeschool student to do that, and he should be so proud.

But what does this mean? Is he going through a major improvement thing?
This is the same kid that would shut down completely at the sight of school supplies, even paper, just a couple of years ago.

Makes no sense, but I'm impressed.:D

Sounds like a milestone! The idea of having a "self-starter" regarding homework or worksheets would make me do the happy dance too!!!

You Go Theo!!! :D :D :D

Give him a big High Five for us, OK? :D

That is too cool, I'd be shocked if Vince, mr. homework hater, did that (unless it was weather related homework, hee hee).

That is just awesome! Not to give advise, but be careful about the praise...I swear I have to watch it with Vince that I don't steal the wind out of HIS sails with my exuberance (but if your son isn't like that, forget I said it).

Well super, awesome, fantastic, woo hoooooo!

, but be careful about the praise...

mili- I know what you mean... and the weird thing is he hated praise when he was little - he would hide or rip up whatever it was you were proud of.
Even now I have to be careful about telling his dad or brothers in front of him - like I have to ask Theo, 'tell your dad/brother what happened' so in case he's not ready to hear about it again he can just avoid the extra attention by changing the subject.

Liz - Theo just turned ten.

I remember one adult autistic doing that of his art work, nobody could explain why to me.

Funny, Mili's observation. My DLH used to be caution about expressing pride on his' children accomplishment, even telling the behaviour therapist his fear that praise would encourage negative behaviour, while I'd encourage with verbal praise and opportunities to reinforce good activities. I would comment on his deeds, good or bad, sometimes thinking he wasn't listening or understanding.
